I think I heard somewhere that Notch was thinking of adding a volcanic biome (not sure if I did, though). If/when he does, I was thinking that it would be cool if he added a feature that was sort of like how a layer of snow covers blocks in the snowy biomes, except it would be ash instead of snow. And maybe the ash could be used for potions somehow?

Maybe occasional eruptions of lava pouring down the volcano and ash filling the sky? There could be alot of ores in it to and maybe a new type of rock, Volcanic rock. Only mine-able by a diamond pick like obsidian?
obsidian, being volcanic glass, should be quite abundant and the ground should have no grass, only dirt (unless grass spreads from a different biome) The ash would be cool, also like snow, maybe it forms small clumps on the ground, and when shoveled, produces ash (like grey glowstone powder) And THAT is what is used in potions. (for like blinding potions?)
It is? I guess I should've done a search. Just didn't think anyone would've thought about this already.
But anyway, I was thinking that volcanic biomes could also have their own unique weather. Ash storms! During which the air would become toxic and harm the player with poison-like effects.
