With all the new features being added it will become inevitable(inevitable? it has already happened lol :tongue.gif:) that one or more of the features in world generation will be undesirable for one reason or another. Likewise some people might LOVE a certain set of generated features and want to see more of them. So why not give a bunch of options for world generation...
possible options could be: Restrict mobs (checklist of mobs that may or may not spawn)
Restrict Biomes( a checklist of biomes, no biomes means everything goes to default)
Weather (checklist of weather effects)
Restrict Structures: (checklist of towns fortresses dungeons and abandoned mineshafts)
Another way of doing it would be instead of a checklist each option could have a slider, varying from none at all too very common(of course for balance options this might not exist for some things)
There could also be certain presets that would affect the way the world is generated as well like say on two axis... Virgin world= no structures abundant resources and select few mobs to Heavily Civilized=lots of manmade" structures, towns possibly cities and castles, abandoned mineshafts and such but with perhaps less untouched materials.
In my eyes, the randomness of Minecraft's generation is it's beauty.
I love it when, say, a mountain blocks my path North or something, because it makes it more challenging for me. The same goes for Ravines and Oceans. I see no point in making it optional.
I spawned in a swamp with a ravine. Best world spawn I could ask for, it is near my spawn, loads of wood and flat land in the swamp and ore filled ravine which I made my town in.
That wouldn't have happened if I restricted myself by getting rid of naturally spawning ravines, or certain biomes.
It is more of a mod than anything else, in fact optifine currently allows you to disable weather.
