Like I said in the subtitle, read this topic before dissing the idea. It's not really how it sounds; hence the quotation marks.
To start, it would be crafted like this.
With the shroom being redstone, the orange wool being blaze powder, and the arrow as a stick.
It would look like a small tool with a wooden handle and a scarlet teardrop shape on top.
Left click does nothing, but when you right click it would increase your range by one block until you tool breaks. This would decrease the durability of the tool by about 1/3, though. It DOES stack, meaning that you can increase it by three blocks.
The tool has one more use. By holding right click on a block, it gives that block yellow particles for about a full minecraft day. From then on, standing on that block, you have unlimited range, until the time wears out or the tool does. However as long as you are standing on the block, the tool slowly, notch by notch (pun completely intended) decreases durability; full within about 2 or so minutes.
Anyways, tell me what you think. It's not my best idea, but it's not my worst, I think.
Not doubting what you're saying but
What have I said that suggests that 25 is not one fourth of 100? :tongue.gif:
The blocks go down in mining speed by 25%, not the staff in durability if that's what you're referring to.
So, with the three* uses of the staff, you could get the the block to 25*% of the old mining rate, because it goes down by 25% each time used.
Ummm... If you had to right click a block to decrease the strength of the block kind of make it make hardly any difference? But it would be incredibly useful for obsidian, and maybe it should effect more blocks per use (instead of 1x1x1x1, it would be 3x3x3x3)

Be caring, please help my dragon hatch by giving him a little click.

..I guess you're right about that. It might be just effective on brick (with or without the prefix of stone) and obsidian.
Fixing the topic. A better idea in it, now. :smile.gif:

Thanks for reading!
Good Idea
Thanks! Any other feedback than that?

* Now edited to two uses per block, so 50%.
