Now that we know waterbreathing potions are being released, this probably won't happen. But I was perusing the "Steve goes to the moon" topic and had an idea for a diver's helmet (which I originally thought might be a space helmet). You would craft it out of a pumpkin and glass panes, or maybe even a regular craftable helmet and glass panes, and it would enable you to swim underwater indefinitely. The benefit: easier underwater building, resource-collecting, squid-hunting, and exploring. This would especially be useful for maps where you spawn in an ocean biome. I'm playing one right now with a lot of cavern access points on the ocean floor, and sometimes, I simply drown attempting to swim into them. If it's possible to spawn in such an environment, simple exploring shouldn't be so hazardous! Resources are scarce in these kind of maps.
If it can't be added to the game, I think this is also a valid suggestion for a modder... and would probably be fairly easy to do.
