As of now, golden apples only completely refill your health and hunger. And then they're gone. And they can only be found in treasure chests guarded by monsters, or by using an absurd amount of gold. So its not worth it at all.
So why not make the golden apple an infinite food source?
Now I know what you're thinking. "But SandvichParty, that would almost certainly make the hunger bar useless!" Well, I have a quick fix to that. Turn the golden apple into a semi-useless item after you eat it (Possibly, an Apple Core or something of the sort). "BUT I THOUGHT YOU SAID IT WOULD BE AN INFINITE FOOD SOURCE!!" With the new potion system thats coming up, there could be a potion called the "Essence of Apple". It would do nothing on its own, but if you held it and right clicked with a golden apple core in your inventory, it would restore the golden apple core back into a golden apple, ready to be eaten again. The potion would then empty back into a normal potion bottle. The ingredients for the potion would be -

This would give a good reason to always stay stocked up on a bit of gold and do something other than make bread and cake with wheat.

Make it have more uses than a standard piece of food healing a bit less every use (Thanks Kyootie1337!).
They're supposed to be hard to get. I mean, it's like a rare-drop item in an MMORPG. You don't expect it to be used more then once, do you? I mean, then everyone would have one.

I think game designers purposefully design rare items to be crap unless used with some other super rare piece of crap, which in turn takes a level 200 bowman to equip. :dry.gif:

Not to say that your idea is less than good, but perhaps instead of making golden apples reusable, it would be a superior idea to improve them further?
I think it would be nifty if they firstly performed their current function, but also would cause an accelerated regeneration of health (as compared to that of a full hunger bar, anyway, on top of being additive to that regeneration) in addition to preventing the hunger bar from decreasing. Of course, it would function in the same way as a potion in that this would be a timed effect. Perhaps 0:45-1:30 would be a rather balanced time interval?
With such a limitation imposed upon said apples, of course, they would increase in value for they would be invaluable in emergency situations whereas one is less-than-likely to survive and there is much to lose. Of course, such occasions are rare in single player as far as I am aware of, and, perhaps, the apples would hold significantly more value in the multiplayer mode?

Lies.
It only takes about 30 or so minutes to get a rare drop item. (After much trial and error)
It takes days to get a golden apple.
1-4 Days looking for a dungeon that contains an apple (Most of them don't)
1- Infinity days looking for 72 Gold to make 8 gold bricks.
Yeah, it's not that ****ing easy.
OT: I say we should get apple seeds. Once an apple is eaten, it drops apple seeds to make apple trees. (Just like in real life, apples have apple seeds)
If you eat a golden apple, it has a 1/10 chance to drop golden apple seeds. (Making is balanced so the seeds won't get abusive.)
