I've been thinking alot about The Void, and thought, "why can't we make a lower part before it's a deathtrap?". Well, i think it would be a good idea.
Maybe underneath the layer of bedrock, when an opening forms into The Void, you can jump down into another layer of the map, with hard-to-see darkness, as it's been during 1.8.1. As i've seen, it adds to difficulty of fighting, should anyone decide to attempt to create challenges in fighting near the void. Well, why not add some background with the little old Endermen?
Well, lemme sum some down in paragraphs.
Void Layer
Basically what i was thinking, is a layer of the void which allows one to explore, and maybe, if they decide to, exit using resources at their disposal. We have a Nether, we have a void, why not add a void layer? After all, the Nether was a dangerous place full of light and lava, with annoying ghasts, and random pigmen, so maybe another world to explore would be nice. Even though we'll probably have Aether as a next world to explore, having another planned makes it better. We have an neutral place (Starting map), an evil place (Nether), and a good place planned (Aether). Why not make a contender within?
From what i am suggesting, there could be random potholes within the void which pulls you into it, and drains your health until you die, like the void would naturally do, but if you don't fall in the uncommonish potholes (which i'd suggest around say... per 3 - 9 squares of radius?), your health won't drain, but something else.
Void Poisoning?
I don't feel like making a right name. Basically, as you explore the top part of The Void, you will see your hunger bar, as a stylish purple (or blackish? whatever sounds good), and basically it acts like food poisoning, where it lowers your hunger bar faster, requiring alot of food to advance within. Maybe it could have a version where it taxes your health at 3/10 hunger instead of 0/10? And maybe the poisoning, or in a way, draining... basically doubles your hunger drain for everything you do. So basically it's like a hardcore mode for top explorers. Perhaps a way to survive the void's effects?
Endermen in The Void
As i've said, maybe it could be where they came from The Void, since it became from finding a way to go under the map and prevent crashes, to a place of darkness, and where if you fall in a pothole, you die. But why not add something for the top layer? Endermen are dark creatures, which teleport wildly. Would give a reason if they were the only encounters within the darkness, as they could very well fit a proper description for an enemy in The Void.
With them teleporting, and popping out, you'd have to try to keep a close eye out, and it might be easier with friends too. Much easier.
And perhaps once you obtain a special item, as mentioned below, they can be sort of passive, until you get close enough and look at them, so nomatter how far you are when you look, they won't attack, unless you attack them, or get to close and look at them.
Light in The Void?
I've been thinking. It's dark, it's scary, we've got an enemy down for it, why not make it not impossible? After all, not everyone can just plain beat something that teleports randomly all over you.
What i suggest is, having ways of leaving natural and unnatural light into giving you a chance to see easier, but the light being half as effective. I was going to suggest that only lava and Glowstone will give you light, but maybe giving anything inside the top layer as half of light would be good. It would be impossible to have any fun there if theres just no way to win. People would just avoid it.
Equipment to lower it's effect?
I was thinking maybe some form of equipment to either stop it from draining your hunger, or perhaps giving off unnatural light for you a see better. So what if, the Ender Pearls had another use? (i said another, because i highly bet it's going to have an alchemical use later)
Maybe Ender Pearls can be used like diamonds, where they can craft armor, or maybe a concentration of an orb, with maybe say a Glowstone? Perhaps a 8 Ender Pearls around a Glowstone to create a... Um.... Uh... Void... Pearl? I don't have a good name for it, but basically since Glowstone is from a world where the only light is from Glowstone and lava, having it as a light for The Void, makes it easier.
And since theres more and more additions into guarded treasure, perhaps some parts of The Void may contain them.
Special Blocks in The Void?
I was thinking. What if The Void was more like a harder version of all 3 worlds, and containing some adventurous requirements to traverse? What if there was special pieces of the void where, it's some form of liquid. Purple, or black, it can be both colors mixed, or just one. Maybe it could like, be a massive tax to your survival just like it would be trying to traverse through the Nether.
Perhaps it could be a mix of lava, where it's slow to get out of, and damages you in some way. Maybe triples your hunger costs, damaging you at 5/10 hunger, and like water, where it can spread, but maybe either as much as lava, or somewhere between lava and water. Oh, and i think it shouldn't be allowed to be bucketed. I guess having maybe some bucket made out of Ender Pearls or something could be used to bucket it, but it evaporates if it's in a non-artificial light source of a certain light level (example, the sun's light source). I'd imagine, that if it was made above-ground, while prevent the sun from stopping it, could also lower the light source around it.
And maybe some form of ground within the void, Maybe where, anything you add within the void, while attempting to get out, or move around, it turns the piece of your item into that block, and sadly, disable the ability to get a void block.
Adventurous Exploring
Theres a way out of the bedrock area of the void, and then some areas of layers to make what would look like a good new around, light ways, and dangers, but now an reason to explore. Well, with gathering Ender Pearls for crafts, maybe using the pearl created with the 8 Ender Pearls and 1 Glowstone, could help double, or triple your viewing radius, allowing you to see and explore the void. Though, i don't really know whats best, but i guess some treasure usable for crafts and stuff. Maybe an ability to create a farm using Void Water, and Void Plants? Would be pretty interesting. Heck, it could even be an alchemical plan!
More enemies?
With a thought of maybe making Endermen passive using the special Pearl created, more enemies should be there. As there are only 11 enemy mobs so far, maybe another 1 or 2 could be used in The Void to give some variation.
Maybe there could be a water-related mob, aswell as, like the Ghast, a flying mob. Not many of them right now, after all. I really don't have a good suggestion here.
Perhaps they could appear once you obtain the Pearl, as The Void might make you seem like a threat once you obtain an ability to see inside.
Closing Statements?
Well, heres from viewing as a small thing, to something big. When i've seen the darkness of The Void on one player-created map, i later (i think about... 3 days later?) thought of a major idea to further The Void's potential to be a whole new area. And i guess if it's not really perfect, look at what people did to create an Aether mod. In fact, if a Void mod was to exist in the future, and an easier capability into using mods for Minecraft was added (an official way, than an outside program), then i would definitely play it and see just how far i can last. As if it was close to the difficulty i depicted, it might actually be fun, so long as i didn't go "too" far on suggesting the difficulty. But hey, random enemy spawns, creepers having a chance to explode you into lava, enemies chancing to push you into lava, aswell as (if they exist, as i NEVER see em anymore) slimes to just murder you in numbers, i'd say The Void's current difficulty isn't that tough as suggested.
Now, with all the pleasantries aside, i'd like to hear from everyone if theres anything right or wrong off this suggestion.
NOTE: All of this is a compilation of posts within this topic, to give a general idea of whats been worked on with a community of ideas. All credit goes to those who assisted this and allowed the ideas to spread this far.
As you all know, there are a lot of areas to the game, aswell as stuff that may be added. But whats there not to say other additions could be made? Lets add some backstory to the Endermen, shall we?
The Void - Starting
Basically, it is a stated form of what would be like horror, using a basis of the Endermen into a giant world of which is a darkened place. Multiple styles of darkness, horror-like ambience, and the need to search all around you in order to survive.
The Void - Possible Entrances
As you know, all sources require an entrance, just as it needs an exit. There have been two forms so far.
Falling into The Void teleporting you within the world of The Void
Basically, in short, one must mine themselves down through bedrock, and attempt to hit The Void, which will give them quite a nice bit of darkness before hitting their destination: A new world. It acts like a portal to The Nether, except no swirly graphics, only a few seconds, and a teleportation into the world itself.
Crafting a Void Portal
Portals portals portals, but we've always had fun with them, right? As it required Obsidian to create a Nether portal, and The Nether's Glowstone to create an Aether portal, so must there be a way to craft a portal to the void. Should be it Aether? Well, this is supposed to be a continuation into the portals to other worlds, but it can just be held to what is possible already.
Glowstone
Why Glowstone again? Well, perhaps something... much different.
With a special crafting recipe of surrounding a Glowstone with Ender Pearls, will craft Corrupted Glowstone, each to be made to craft a portal. And when created, must be activated using a special Ender Pearl, by using, a smaller version of crafting, using a 2x2 of Ender Pearls to craft a concentrated one, that turns into a purple Ender Pearl. Using this lights the portal to The Void, creating a strange darkness around, lowering the light around it, stoppable with torches, but not lowering it enough to cause spawning.
Blocks within The Void
There is another craft of which to use for it aswell. When you fall, you can work on gathering some of the blocks, of which, was thought to look like Bleeding Obsidian, of which can be used to spark up a portal using, yes, a special Ender Pearl. Though there would need to be a way to escape...
NOTE: I am not good with names, but this is a depiction of what each is, so generic names and generic descriptions are all i can muster.
Void Dirt: Acts like natural dirt.
Void Rock: Acts like natural rock.
Void Water: A dark version of water, being harder to see than normal water, just as is to traverse through. It acts like a strange goop, making it be somewhere between the sight of lava and water, aswell as the traverse speed of it. It has little to no transparency when viewed from above. Traversing into it will make you lose air twice as fast, making it possible to create underwater dungeons.
Void Lavawater?: A world need some form of environmental hazard at least. It looks much different than Void Water, moving at a slow speed to almost a near-halt. Void Water counteracting with this will cause the winner to well... overtake the block. (aka, replacing the block like how water can do to lava) It can hurt you, but does not perform health damage. It instead, drains your hunger, and makes your character form pain sounds, and starts to hurt your health when your hunger is depleted, making it take longer, but being more of an annoyance to use alot of food during your trip in The Void.
Void Ores: Commons ones which allow you to craft items, aswell as perhaps, craft blocks to be used outside the Void. At least to have 1 - 3 types of ore.
Void Plants: Would make quite a difference for potions. There could be at least 1 type growing upon Void Dirt around, which is harvestable.
Blocks and their ability outside The Void
As being in a place of darkness, they will unnaturally lower the light around them whilst placed. Sunlight, however, prevents it, but to some extent. Though they don't lower the light much, if you make a big enough structure, it can be enough to make mobs spawn. Light sources placed on it can make it almost never spawn mobs.
Void Plants can only be placed on Void Dirt, but does not grow if Sunlight hits them, leaving the need to create a dark place. Other light sources do not prevent growth, but has a small effect to it. Void Plants require water in order to grow, like Sugar Cane.
It's possible to use Void blocks to create a dungeon with torches, allowing mob spawning within, and creating an experience.
Void Layers
The Void, being a plane, requires layers at least.
Layer 1 - Top Layer: Primarily has what would look like. Dirt, Waters, a few rock areas, cavern openings... just like the natural layer on the neutral plane. Ravines may occur.
Layer 2 - Rock Layer: As you pass through rocks, so do you move through with some pockets of dirt, water, and ores. Underground Ravines (ceiling ravines) may occur.
Layer 3 - Dangerous Layer: As you move closer to the end of the layers, dangers are required. A discolored version of water which can harm you, like lava, with a EASY depiction of if it's safe or not. Void Lavawater will be spotted around points inside, requiring you to use Void Water, or moving around it. Rare ores and other ores, may be spotted inside.
Layer 4 - Fall Layer: It acts like the actual void in the neutral plane. It will drain everything until you die, and you lose everything. Though there is indication of falling, some caverns may intersect into this layer, making a "leap of faith" not a very good idea. Though it appears there is nothing below, some prerequisites must be made before something is below.
All layers are like the neutral plane's layers. Layer 1 is somewhere between 1 - 7 Z levels of water, 1 - 4 Z levels of dirt, and 1 - 2 Z levels of rock. Layer 2 has 19 Z levels of rock, random pockets of ores, very few rare ores, and dirt, with water and lavawater. Layer 3 has mostly 19 Z levels of rock, random pockets of ore, and rare ore, small pockets of dirt, with water, and alot of lavawater pockets. Layer 4 has nothing, and anything falling below it disappears/dies.
Void's Influence on you and your survival
No new area is good without some way to make it good. During your trip within the void, you will notice that your hunger bar has changed into a purple-ish tint. (close to food poisoning tinting to green) This indicates the void is harming you, by tripling your hunger speed, making you require heavy preparations into surviving The Void. Though, most would be prepared by now.
A way to lower Void Poisoning
The Void is draining you too far? Well, perhaps an easy way of lowering it's influence is possible. With resources from the neutral plane helping you survive, perhaps using resources from The Void to help you survive it. Two words: Void Armor.
With ores being mined in The Void, so should there be a way to mine it out, and craft it into armor. So with ore prepared, and a crafting table at the ready, armor can be made to lower it's effect.
Ore 1 Full Set: 2.0 Hunger Speed (1.35 Hunger Speed if the only ore)
<possible>Ore 2 Full Set: 1.55 Hunger Speed
<possible>Ore 3 Full Set: 1.35 Hunger Speed
<possible>Rare Ore Full Set: Natural Hunger Speed
With assistance of Void Armor, one can survive easier.
Escaping The Void? Yes.
Should the way through to be to fall and survive, then there should be a way out. The Endermen will be the only thing you will fight, leaving you to gather Ender Pearls, and, using Purple Ender Pearls (as crafted in 2x2), will allow you to escape, regardless if you have a portal or not. But what if it sends you back to a bad place you tried to escape? Perhaps a bit more like it can act like a nightmare. Instead of teleporting you to where you would've went when you fell, it will transport you to your spawn point (your bed, if you have one), making it looks like you were never there, even though you keep what you got.
What The Void would look like
Well, perhaps just like most would depict it. A dark environment, that would normally be like the neutral world (aka, the world you start within), no ceiling, but a depiction of a form of bedrock, making it look like you did fall through, but to be in an inescapable plane.
There is mostly of what would be like dirt, rock, and ores, unnatural to what you would see in the neutral world, aswell as water being somewhat as half as water, and lava.
The darkness within it naturally tough to see through, making it tougher to fight. However, it has a possibility to viewing itself much easier. Think half of tiny's render distance (which is what bedrock-deep dark fog is like)
Removing the darkness' influence on your sight
There is darkness that nearly makes it impossible to see, even though there is light it tries to remove. All Light sources naturally will have half their influence in The Void, making it hard for them to be of use, but will increase your sight somewhat when near a light source. However, a more permanent option, is to create a 'new' way to see.
By Crafting Ender Pearls together, filling in a 3x3, creates a special pearl, which, when used, permanently removes the natural fog of The Void, allowing you to see through darkness. Sort of like how creatures can see through darkness, you will be able to see almost as much as you would normally in the neutral world.
Consequences of the pearl's use
Everything action needs a reaction. Because you have killed enough Endermen to obtain such a power, it must have a consequence over it. In a way, something created the void, and that something would now be aware of you one you use the pearl upon yourself, making The Void more of a threat to you than just sending Endermen.
Enemies within The Void
As you know, a plane is not a true plane without denizens inside of it.
Endermen: The same as they naturally play, except they pick up blocks within The Void more rare than they would in the neutral plane.
Slender Ones: From what is depicted, they have the ability to pick you up, of which you must remove their hold. They slowly try to kill you from this, which requires you to fight them with ranged attacks.
Ender Elementals: These types of enemies form out purple particles from them, like how Endermen do when they teleport, only it's much less and rare to see. They start out invisible making a scary noise. Within lower layers, it can sound like it's echoing. They make an indication when they're about to attack, like how creepers do when a hissing, however, they instead, make out what is a scream. (of half the volume of a natural one perhaps) Once the indication is made, you have about a second before they attack to find them. If you hit them during this, they teleport away and try to attack you again. Should their attack hit, they will be vulnerable and visible for 3 seconds before teleporting away.
Void version of Ghasts?: Perhaps a void version of a floating creature, that doesn't look like Ghasts, but float and attack, making use of ranged attacks more often.
Void Monster: A giant form of the void itself, most likely being the main boss of the void. Aftering falling within the final layer, once the final parts of it has been made, there is a large platform, and below, death, should you fall off it. Climbing onto the platform is a floatable boss, which floats back onto the platform if knocked down. The only way to kill it is using the power of the void, aswell as resources outside of it. Once killed, drops a rare items. (still needs imagination)
Void Gravity
Due to the fact of having a different standpoint of "should you need to fall", will require a change in the gravity. Because of this, gravity will be depicted on how low you are within the void. The lower you are the harder it is to control your character when jumping, making him jump far up and going all over the place. (even though it won't give you wonky controls, just make you require to move within the air and time your jumps)
This also lowers fall damage. Though at most, the lowest point will double your character's jump height, making it barely anything.
However, during your fall into the void, the first time you touch a block after falling into it, will cause, at most, 2 hearts of damage, depending on how far the fall is.
Closing Statement
If you feel anything needs changing, then try to help work on making this suggestion further up. Constructiveness is highly welcome.
This is a great idea! Love it but there are a few things I dont like (like the Half light idea, I honestly think that will ruin it). Anyways I think it is a great idea.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Less lag. Infinitely large worlds. No sky limit. No bedrock. Top and bottom far lands. 3D Biomes. Improved performance.
This is a great idea! Love it but there are a few things I dont like (like the Half light idea, I honestly think that will ruin it). Anyways I think it is a great idea.
I suggested it primarily for my realistic version of a void being "an attempt at removing a constant source of light" where it doesn't eat away at the light at a fast enough speed, keeping it at half the light. As i suggested about the crafted Pearl (of which i don't know a good name about as of yet), would double, or triple (haven't decided) your previous vision as if you're one block away from the void, but with double/triple vision, making it sort of like being in a fog radius of short, as shown in video settings.
Heres a way to see what The Void is like.
The Void's current fog amount: Half Tiny setting fog radius.
Double Void fog amount: Tiny setting fog radius.
Triple Void fog amount: Short setting fog radius.
As the primary point of a suggestion, it is to suggest something, and, if accepted, does not always turn out as suggested once made. Which means regardless if it was made as a mod, or an official plan, it would most likely not be as planned. I'd just be happy if someone made it to play with. After all, i like playing games for challenges, and fun. Sometimes i find fun in challenges. As long as it's not impossible, or made only for pros.
So you want some layers beneath the bedrock? I'm not sure I fully understood that bit.
Anyway there are issues with making more layers beneath the bedrock, but maybe instead you could have a new realm like the nether that is accessed by falling into the void? So there can be potholes in the bedrock like you said but uncommon, maybe 1 per 9 chunks or even less. when falling into the void, instead of dying, there is a loading screen which says "entering the void" like for the nether and then you spawn on the top layer of the void dimension which can be like you described.
I don't know how you would get out though...
hmm perhaps a diffrent word... the reverse world? and maybe instead of natual light increasing your viewing range it decreases it in this world?? I would personaly love to try this. just pictureing bleeding obsidian and probably poison water stuff makes me interested. another tthing that could make it interesting is if you enter this void realm with full health you die imidiatly, so you would have to enter with damage in order to survive. I suppose if you wanted it cold have the added challange of appering upside down on screen with an inverted Y axis. that would be amusing to say the least

That does sound pretty good. What i tried to suggest was a difficult version of all worlds combined, while also being a world that give it all. Though i guess with the levels part in 1.9 being added, theres probably a chance it won't be that difficult if you farm levels like mad, becoming mostly invincible. But it would probably cap to 0.5 hearts per hit.
As i can tell, Aether will most likely be made using Nether equipment, but i'm not certain fully. I'd imagine there might be... Nether ore in the future? Well, there are alot of things that can work this way. Another world opening another world for another world. It's sort of like this concept. If you remember, the Aether mod directly implied that glowstone from The Nether is used to craft a portal using water, which looks close to whats like a counterpart.
But having thought off j's (i forgot his forum name, sorry, i got a bad memory) topic, corrupt glowstone sounds pretty great. From the way he formed it, it's a form of glowstone with ender pearls to create Corrupt Glowstone. There would be many ways that would sound good for this, as many crafting recipes can have a possibility to intersect between eachother. Maybe, a form where an Ender Pearl can be forged into a type of form, perhaps dust, to craft around the glowstone for corrupted, then maybe it can be used AS a portal to the void. Then, bedrock can be above you, and it will be like a whole 'nother world.
Thanks, you and him helped inspire me add onto my idea.
You do realize you are not meant to enter the void? The void refers to the place Notch has not coded and is not part of the game. If you inhabited the void there would always be a void beneath that.
Yes, i do realize that. I've always liked seeing new things, and it's great when you finally see it, and try to go further into it.
Though i guess you are correct in a way. This was close to a place under bedrock, but maybe if it was formed as a new world, it wouldn't be that way, and the void from the natural world, can still be an endless part of it that kills you.
hmm perhaps a diffrent word... the reverse world? and maybe instead of natual light increasing your viewing range it decreases it in this world?? Bleeding Obsidian looks perfect for the world. The structure of blue and black gives quite a good and scary ambiance for the environment. It was, in a way, mean't to be scary at first, but later transform into a world you need to get used to. Fighting Endermen in almost complete darkness adds to the scares. He could move torwards you, then when you see him, you get scared a bit as he teleports instead of attacking you, as a randomization from if you can attack him fast enough.
And when you get to the double/triple light part, more enemies can spawn to try and kill you, with a major world of goopey void water, some blocks here and there, and maybe plants too. All ready to take and use into the natural world.
In a way, it is like a reverse world. With people naturally staying on a planet, the sun can be disorientating if you can never see space off-world, so if that part is put aside, it can look just like a reverse world, where it's nothing but darkness with a chance of light, just as it can eat away at light to halfen it's effectiveness.
As for the damage part, i'm not completely sure. It's tempting, so long as it's not completely overboard (like 1 heart only), but maybe perhaps it could be like, you must be damaged in anyway in order to enter. And maybe it can't work during peaceful mode. Like a difficulty lock, so you must be at easy/normal/hard/hardcore in order to enter, and i guess during non-hardcore, you can change from easy to normal to hard, and back to easy, so it's where you're in a constant fear of being attacked by anything, leaving near to no time to prepare. Usually enemies spawn like... 5 seconds? Just basically adds onto the fear.
There are some pros and cons to your idea. In short, some things are agreeable, some are not. Though i do like horror, i was more meaning to think about keeping it a form of difficulty as if you're going to an extra world.
Like maybe... Aether and Nether merging it's resources together to make a block to form a void portal, using an ender pearl (of which won't be consumed) to make a void portal, and could be used rather than a layer beyond bedrock. Perhaps the void beyond the layer of bedrock could just be the destruction area as usual, but maybe say... if you have an ability to, it instead transports you into the void map from the top. Having the lessened fall damage works well too, especially if theres a way you can survive the fall. Maybe just the void being mostly a maze of scares?
I'm actually happy that you're going on my path into making it scary. As you know, creepers are scary when you can't tell where or when they will explode, and when you hear em, it's too late to run. Having a world with those scares (bigger than what the Nether would give at the moment), would have multiple versions of enjoyment. Though not all think the same, if it scares you, it has a form of horror style.
The sanity thing seems sort of useless, however, it would be a good ambiance effect. Hearing noises, while moving through the void will make having the need to search through the void with care, as you won't know when an enemy is coming out. Perhaps a random ambience effect will be a good thing, where noises spawn as the playbacks end, and have a chance to not make any noise for a while, giving you a worry if it will play and noises or not. And perhaps the random music. Like some drum sound music with the "ominous wind" effect.
As i said before, i never like thinking about enemies, and your ideas on the enemies are pretty good. The invisible enemies seem a little big, unless some form of ability to enable seeing em slightly visible enough. Like a transparent form at least.
I also had a good read about the boss. A master of the void, and having the ability to kill it seems pretty heavy. Maybe when ores and such are possible in Aether and Nether, there could be a way where both good and evil combination can be crafted to create a special sword for killing it easier. Boss fights are mean't to be hard for sure, but also for it to not be impossible. Maybe it can die, but it continues to respawn like natural enemies until you use the special sword. So like, you kill it without the special sword, it respawns some time after it's death. Having a weakened effect of the void draining you down when it dies sounds good.
As for the layering, it could be possible within the world. Having the bleeding obsidian looks on the first layer looks good, and as you go further down, there could be more to version the next bunch of layers. Could easily just be a recoloring if noone wants to make different blocks.
In a way, the people are right, having extra layers will just cause too much lag, but keeping it as another world, will make it easier.
You do realize you are not meant to enter the void? The void refers to the place Notch has not coded and is not part of the game. If you inhabited the void there would always be a void beneath that.
This.
Plus, the nether is supposed to be what is under bedrock.
yeah, I just don't like talking about blocks, I have terrible ideas usually when considering them, but I basically thought of if you start falling into the void you teleport to the void dimension, (aether mod style) giving the illusion of a single world (if done well) My idea of getting out of the ender is using an item dropped by one of the mobs there. as with the invisible mob, maybe he needs a charge up time for his attack (you hear screaming and he teleports infront of you, starts emitting particles then hits you for alot of damage before taking 3 seconds to go invisable again. Also I didn't only think of audio hallucinations, but visual ones. (it looks like there is a block or mob there, but as it gets close to you, or you get close to it it dissapears)
So far theres two steps that can be taken for this idea. Teleport from the void, or a creatable portal.
The idea of adding items from within the void to leave does sound good, but also having an ability to come and go as you please is another. Maybe the only way to enter it is through the bedrock, then gather some bleeding obsidian, then later constructing a portal made out of bleeding obsidian, and using an ender pearl to open the void portal.
Also, i noticed a news topic about black goo textures. That looks closely perfect for the void water within the world. But it looking like space itself, makes me think... "what if it's like normal water, but air is depleted twice as fast?". Well, since the next update will allow levels giving you increased defence, breathing, etc, this could be like a Hardcore difficulty of worlds. And with using Hardcore difficulty, could make it narrowly impossible if you need to collect something to leave, and connecting a portal between it using the materials there, just to make a come and go effort there.
And having an ability to attack invisible creatures sounds pretty good. With a bow handy, and if your ears work well, you can essentially attack them if you know exactly where they are, so long as they take a second or two to begin the attack pattern. I'd say a diamond sword would take it down in maybe 2 - 3 hits? It sounds pretty good with some enemies being invisible, so long as they aren't impossible to beat.
Plus, the nether is supposed to be what is under bedrock.
Have you checked how Notch created The Nether? In his reality, it's a different dimension of the normal world, only it's made of infinite rock, air, lava, and monsters, with zombies, apparently, being what would be depicted as the opposite of human life for the natural world, due to their passiveness with visitors there, and with Ghasts being perhaps... guards, or slavers? It's not truly 'Hell'
And remember, Notch also added that going close to the center of the Earth, instead of being a hotfooted death, is a dark land that sucks up even the light itself when you are near it. Which makes it more of a portal to a void, than a gateway to Hell.
The void is a space where the game ends not another place to play. If it would be turned into a inhabitable place what would then be under the void?
When this idea was formed, it was originally to be a layer within the void, however, since the topic was formed, the people worked around, and thought it would be easier to be a world instead, like how the Aether and Nether is.
I've added many topics on the main post on what explains changes to the idea. I didn't want to touch the current frame of the idea to let people know what it originally was.
And to explain...
This is basically a suggestion. Something of which is completely changeable and tries to make a depiction of an extra area of the game, to increase gameplay and replayability while also giving a form of difficulty. Anything has a possibility of being included, just as has a chance to be mod worthy for the game. Suggestions are also dismissible between the populace, but not all of them can be advanced easily, as it takes more than one mind to make a suggestion perfect, as it helps balance it out, add on, and change things within it until it is completely perfect for play. After all, suggestions help inspire, but it doesn't always mean they will be added.
I made this suggestion so others can discuss it either constructively, or just work out what sounds bad. All suggestions, after all, have a chance, and with that chance, others can discuss, work out balances/changes/etc, and see just how far and in-depth it can get until it works out perfectly.
We've all seen how the Aether mod went out, as not everything can take one person to figure out. They can require more than one to help balance, add onto, and change it all, until it works perfectly. And Aether, is a great example of it.
Truthfully, from a standpoint of someone who knows a little bit about coding, I think it would be a bad idea, although a good concept.
A good concept:
Hey, I always thought there should be a special "Bottom level" biome in minecraft. Kinda like the hell level in Terraria.
A bad idea:
This would require a complete overhaul on either the generation code to move everything else up 10 levels or so to account for the 10 "New" levels of the void biome, or a complete overhaul of the Minecraft code entirely: Blocks are currently specifically designed NOT to be place-able above layer 127 or below layer 0, this is because there are 27levels- any more would go outside that binary integer. Any more is simply impossible, and as such, Notch has taken countermeasures to prevent this, mainly to keep it from crashing. (However, this is not limited to entities, which can be ANYWHERE.) The Overhaul would require there to be 28 levels in minecraft, or 256- enough so you could stack the Overworld on top of the Nether. That would cause many smaller computers to lag... a LOT.

After all, when you mix these three, you get a cannon builder.

Most people just read the first post, jump to the bottom, maybe look at the last few posts and then insert their comment - or at least I do that - Your first post sounds like you don't know what the void is, and people are going to point that out regardless of the ideas development. The best you can do is use the first post to representing your idea, and then edit it to fit the development of that idea. Then newbies of the thread will understand what your idea is now (rather than what your idea was originally), and oldbies (probably not a word) can better track the development of the idea.

Please stop crying. I can't interrogate you while you're crying.
I think i might try to overhaul the new additions to the idea, and change up what people suggest, as there are now 2 people so far who have done what you said: Don't read through all posts. For now, i'll probably instead add a SPOILER tag to bump down what the idea originally was, and slowly work through all the posts that changed the idea around to what seems okay, but it might take a while, as it's a lot of stuff to work with.
Well, I like this idea, I've been thinking about a Voidworld when I entered the void on Creative in the first Pre test, (The biggest difference is that there was little particles of Grey, sort of like an Ash, looked pretty awesome.)
So here's a few of my Ideas
"Void Disintegration"
Instead of a Void Poisoning, there is a Disintegration, that will take effect if you remain too long in the void, what this would look like is your pixels start to darken to black (Or in other words, the color would bleach from them and then they would then turn to blackish Grey. all your color would have bleached away before you started to disintegrate.) and fall off, starting around your arms and legs and moving upwards, how this would have an Effect is that you would lose health and be unable to heal it. (in a sense, what would happen is your Hearts themselves would darken and disappear. Eventually you would die, turning into a Pile of Dust.)
This effect could also work on blocks from the other areas, as the Void is more of an Opposition of All.
The blocks would behave sort of how you would, their colors would bleach and they would slowly turn black, finally converting into a Stony like Color
"Protecting from Void disintegration"
How you could protect yourself is by using Ender pearls around a Diamond which would produce an Incomplete Void Pearl, which would then need to be surrounded by glowstone in the crafting grid, and then would prevent you from disinigrating, but it would still leave an Effect on you. After remaining in the Void for about 3 minecraft days, all the color of your skin would have been bleached away to a greyish color, and you would emit smokey particles like an Enderman, in short, after a while of being in the Void you would turn into an Enderman-like Player. Enderman will be passive, like all other inhabitants of the void, but everything living would run in terror from you. (Possibly Undead like Zombies and skeletons would simply ignore you) In a sense, you would be come part of the Void. (An optional idea here is that once you have been "Void-ified" You will then Regen health while in the void in addition to having hunger deactivated in all the dimensions, or perhaps feeding your hunger by killing things, this could be very fun on a SMP server. One other optional is that once you have been Void-ified you can break bedrock, or in a sense open rifts to the void. Perhaps allowing creatures of the void to spawn around it, in the Overworld. I could see this happening in some sort of PVP server, with a group of players working together to stop some kind of Evil Dark lord of the void, who is destorying everything by opening rifts to the void, would be fun to have.) Another optional idea is that you will hit as hard as an Iron sword with your Fists (the Damage added is from the fact that you are now more of and Enderman than your original form) Perhaps also being able to throw a shadowy like Projectile when rightclicking with nothing in your hands (Charging sort of like a bow maybe, but more like your hand would emit smokey particles and then launch a blackish grey orb (Like a snowball) which would deal the same amount of damage as a Fully charged arrow, plus dealing a total of 3 hearts damage over the course of 15 seconds) A person who has been turned into a Enderplayer would be a formidable Opponent indeed. (Another thought which would be optional is striking a Enderplayer with a Weapon would deal half damage, and double durability, hitting with fists would deal 2.5 damage to the person who struck the Enderplayer in addition to Bleaching their fist pixels of color a bit.)
On how to protect non-void blocks, you could protect them by creating a larger Void Pearl, by surrounding a Glowstone block with Ender Pearls which would emit a Radius of Protection from disinitgration, however their colors would still bleach and fade. (Living things will have a slowed rate of disintegration while inside the Protective Bubble.)
Netherrack would turn to a purpleish color, in addition to any flames on it being Purpleish Grey, and dealing double damage to non-void Mobs and non-Enderplayer players. Lava would also turn a Purpleish grey, and deal damage like Fire would. Those set on fire like overworld fire would have Damage over time like fire, in addition to their Disintegration being accelerated
Unprotected glowstone would lose it's color, turn to a greyish, and then instead Darken the area around it, this Darkstone could be harvested with a pickaxe (Which would yield a whole block, or break into 5-9 Darkdust) and be moved to the surface to be used for Mob traps and the like
Smoothstone and stone like products (Such as cobble, halfstep, glass (Which will still darken to a grey, in addiition to sand and gravel) and Stone brick and the like, with Furnaces too. ) Will be immune to the effects of Void disintegration, as it only effects living things (zombies would turn into skeletons if they managed to fall into the void, and skeletons would turn into a pile of bones. everything else in the overworld would simply turn to Dust.)
Dying in the Void
Dying in the void as a normal player would result in you and your stuff turning into a pile of Dust, you would respawn at your spawn point.
Dying as an Enderplayer in the Void or overworld would result in you first exploding in a blast of shadows which would hurt everything living nearby, those killed would be turned to dust, and would put out nearby torches. then you would respawn at the place where you last entered/exited the void, you would still be an Enderplayer.
Curing Enderification
This would be done by remaining in a room full of glowstone for about 3 minecraft days, (Same time as turning into an Enderplayer) once you had turned back into an normal player, you would be resistant to Void Effects (Such as being hit by or hitting an Enderplayer, you would only take Half damage (So for instance, you would take half a heart of damage for hitting an Enderplayer, and their shadowy bolt would deal half damage, and not deal damage over time)
To the point where you could remain in a Protective Bubble of Voidpearl, and not disintegrate or turn into an Enderplayer. You could still turn into an Enderplayer if you left the bubble. but you would need to have a Voidpearl with you, or you would start to disintegrate halfway.
How the Void would look
Personally I'd like to see it a bunch of grey stony Islands floating in a Sea of blackness. (Perhaps allowing flight to Enderplayers in the Void) falling to the bottom would result in you taking a increase of Disintegration (No effect if you have a Voidpearl or are an Enderplayer) And being shunted to the nearest isle. With pools of Purplish Lava and streaks Purpley Netherrack with some flames on them.
Mobs of the Void
I can't really think up any Mobs, aside from Enderman and already suggested mobs in the OP
Except for one
Great Enderplayer
This would be an Enderplayer who has spent a long time in the Void, they would appear as a Writhing mass of shadows, their main attacks would be to fire shadowy orbs at the player (Like Ghast fireballs really, they are about the size of a ghast And a Charging Beam attack which would be INSTANT DEATH to anything living caught in it's blast the Presnece of a Great Enderplayer would snuff out torches and disable glowstone and protective bubbles
Drops would be an Endersword which would be like a Diamond sword, only dealing 3 hearts more damage and the ability to hold right click to charge to shoot a blast like the Great Enderplayer shoots
Spawns in "void Ruins" at the end, would not spawn anywhere else, so you don't have to worry about it wandering over and destroying your base
Void Ruins
Would be the same as an overworld stronghold, in additon to having lots of Enderman and the like inside it, and lots of Voidpearl loot, ending with a Battle with a Great Enderplayer.
This is my Idea, it would be more effective I think to add a new realm instead of making more layers in the existing overworld. A Thought on balenceing is that when you die in the void, your Save gets deleted. (Unless you are on creative, which you would respawn as normal) In SMP you would be banned from the Server, unless you were the Host or an Admin. (Just like if you were on Creative in Singleplayer, you would respawn at your overworld spawn)
How about, when you fall into the void (this void (This would be an else/if statement), you get on fire, the sky turns red like you're in lava, and you die.

This.
Plus, the nether is supposed to be what is under bedrock.

Otherwords,
Most people just read the first post, jump to the bottom, maybe look at the last few posts and then insert their comment - or at least I do that - Your first post sounds like you don't know what the void is, and people are going to point that out regardless of the ideas development. The best you can do is use the first post to representing your idea, and then edit it to fit the development of that idea. Then newbies of the thread will understand what your idea is now (rather than what your idea was originally), and oldbies (probably not a word) can better track the development of the idea.
Nothing else needs to be said.
