Each night, there should be a 1 in 30 chance of having a "Red Moon." During Red Moon nights:
*All hostile mobs that spawn (spiders, skeletons, zombies, creepers) instantly know where you are and start heading towards you, regardless of how far away they are. Monster assault ftw!
*Skeletons and zombies gain the ability to open wooden doors.
*Creepers will automatically self-destruct if they are within 20 (?) blocks of you, and if they can no longer make progress towards you for several seconds. (Basically they will be berserkers trying to breach your walls for the other monsters. (Some new AI required).
*All wolves (including neutral, hostile, and tamed wolves) turn into werewolves (a la Mo' Creatures) that can only be damaged with gold tools. These werewolves can also open wooden doors. They will turn back into their former type of wolf after the night.
*The gold clock item should indicate if there is a red moon. The red moon should also be visible in the sky. You should have a few moments of visibly seeing the Red Moon before its effects begin (such that you can get ready).
How I intend for this to effect gameplay:
*Make the game less monotonous. After you get established, you basically face no threat. With this, you have periodic waves of monster assaults that you must still defend against.
*If you don't want creepers blowing up your precious stuff, then head to an open field, or a crude, disposable citadel when the Red Moon nights occur. (Think of the Helm's Deep battle in LOTR: The Two Towers!)
*You'll have to check at the beginning of each night if it is a Red Moon night, either by looking at the sky, or using a clock. More paranoia for the win, mwhahahahaha!
*Eventually make all of your important doors out of iron (especially the one to your wolf pen, haha!)
Note that Endermen would still be neutral during these Red Moon nights until looked at.
Yeah, I admit, I got the idea from Terrarria...but also from this:
Also, I forgot to mention, trying to go to bed during a Red Moon event would guarantee getting woken up by monsters infinitely many times throughout the night.
Notch or Jeb already said that this would be copying Terraria too much (ironic, right?), perhaps something more Nether-like, the Ender Night maybe?
Portal particles could float around, the moon would get subtle creeper face shape on it, and an increase number of strange sounds.
yeah .. having a special event that make the npc stronger or just getting more of them look like too much terraria and people will complain about copying it :sad.gif: but i like some of your ideas :tongue.gif:
I would give this a new game-type, but yeah this would be really interesting if polished.
the most immediate eyesore of this idea is wolves turning into werewolves, that a really bad idea.

I like the general idea, but I'd prefer it be made more consistent.
Why not just have the monsters spawn and seek out the player, just as a matter of course? Doesn't need a new game mode, it just happens normally.
Hell, why not tie it to that leveling system they haven't fully fleshed out yet? The higher your level is, the more monsters seek you out, and the more varied they are?
What if it happened like clockwork? Say, every third night is a "monster attack" night. Monsters ignore light sources (so they can spawn in light, which prevents people from simply spamming torches everywhere for six miles) and spawn within X blocks of the player. Ideally, this distance would be far enough away so that they don't spawn inside a reasonably-sized fortress (you're SOL if it's a 50-block wide monstrosity though.) Maybe they spawn approximately 18-26 blocks away from the player's current position?
And then they just kind of seek out the player. Throughout the night, the monsters deliberately seek out and attempt to kill the player. Rather than making special adjustments to monster AI, I'd rather it just be worked out with new monsters. I remember seeing someone's idea for an Ogre monster, I think it was, that could destroy walls? Add monsters like that so that the monsters can eventually break through walls.
Additionally, these events happen regardless of whether you're above ground or underground - so maybe there'd be a way to track which day it is, so you know not to be in a mine when the evil night happens.
Anyway, the idea is to just give players a reason to WANT to build fortified structures in Survival mode. Right now... monsters just don't feel like much of a threat, ever. Even on Hard :-/
You realize that you stole this from Terraria? And that the makers of Terraria will too? And so we can't really use this? Plus creepers are bad enough without a boost like this...
There was supposedly an old game mode called zombie siege or something, which is what I thought this idea came from. I think they cancelled it, but given the current version, I wouldn't be surprised if they finally put it in. In that mode, the moon rises red and the sky turns purple. All mobs become zombies and spawn more frequently. I believe they would have been able to break down blocks as well.

I WANNA HAS DIS NAOW!!!
Maybe a modder could do this?
also, I find this to be Terraria inspired.

Unfortunately, however...
OH GOD LOOK OUT IT'S A SLUUUUT

It would satisfy everyone. Don't want creepers destroying your house? Play easy-hard. Want an extreme experience? Play hardcore.
As a harcore-only addition, I give you a . As a all-modes addition, I give you a simply for the creativity.
