So lets review what resources Minecraft consists of:
Textures
Extrememly low resolution low quality textures. Textures dont give computers a very large workload no matter how beautiful unless combined with one of the following:
Particle effects
Very basic water dynamics and extremely basic physics and lighting system similar to old games such as Deus Ex 1, which means there is a huge chunk of work the processor shouldnt be doing.
Polygons
Very very simple polygons, which means there is a huge chunk of work the video card shouldnt be doing.
Now I love Minecraft dont get me wrong. I am just really frustrated because its very, very resource demanding and when I play Minecraft the FPS is painful, even with optifine smooth. A large chunk of people bought the game thinking their computer would be more than a match for a graphically stone age game, but that is turning out to not be the case.
I know someones going to point out that the games terrain is infinite, but that DOES NOT MATTER. A computers workload is dependant on what is loaded AT THE PRESENT MOMENT, so if you travel a hundred miles away from your spawn point and your computer hasnt crashed, its because terrain data isnt loaded all at once. Terrain data is dependant on the physical memory of your computer, whereas how much terrain is capable of being loaded at once for viewing is dependant on your processor, video memory and RAM.

Seriously, there needs to viewable crafting recipes in the game. Go support this idea. Also click on my profile to view my space thread under find content.
I am very frustrated about the lag too, as i even use all my computer RAM to bareley keep a server up. One idea i've had to reduce lag is to not generate from surface to bedrock, so that monsters dosen't walk around in caves with no people being around, and when the players start digging the underground generates. Is this possible? I hope so, it would make servers much more easier to run.
If it's taking up all your ram, edit the info.plist file in the minecraft app to allow more ram usage.
It uses an average of 500 mgb of RAM, and even less with optifine. I have tried those "allocate more RAM manually" and similar Miencraft "fixes" and they dont work. The idea that Minecraft doesnt utilize enough of your RAM is a myth.

Once again; minecraft's problems are not something you can fix by allocating it more RAM. I have 1300 RAM and as I said Minecraft uses much less than that. I have tried the RAM "fixes". Optifine and similar mods are the only fixes capable of at least remedying the problems.

so ye probably you need a better internet or computer.
My old lsptop could handle it. Running on
Windows vista
Intel duo core prossedor
Intel built in video card
Ram 3
And somethings i don't remember.
So i geus you need to run it in default textures max ram usage en everything on low
Changing the settings doesnt seem to affect the FPS of the game at all. Ive experimented with far and tiny render distance, as well as with smooth lighting and graphics. I can say for 100% sure that changing graphics options does almost nothing.
If you feel that changing the settings helps its no doubt to me that its your mind playing tricks on you.

I'm getting a few stutters and a bit of lag on my computer. It's a little out of date, but probably more powerful than most minecraft players. I'm running
intel core2duo 3.2 ghz
4gb of ram ddr2
ati 5770 video card
1tb disk running at 7200rpm
The game isn't finished yet, so hopefully he nails down the bugs before the final release. All I know is that my computer (completely free of malware) should run this game near flawlessly. I can play the game fine, but the hickups get a bit annoying.

http://getsatisfaction.com/mojang/topics/notch_fix_the_lag_now has a screengrab of of an example computer running Minecraft. It is using 100% of the CPU.

and how exactly do you do that? Is it possible to do for the servers too?
