Out of the few maps I have made in 1.8 and the 1.9 prerelease, about half of them have spawned me in a place with no wood, forcing me to scrap villages for resources, and leave the Tesificates to fend for themselves.
My idea is that when spawning a random world, the player should have an option to choose from a few spawn biomes. For instance, if they select forest, the game will cycle through random maps until it finds a map that has x leaf blocks and x log blocks within x blocks of spawn. It could also include a desert or swamp finder.
Good or bad idea?
Probably bad idea, that seems like it would take quite a lot of world generation to come up with a good spot. Even searching within just one world for the nearest X biome type could be a time hog, though the idea is good.

I spawned in the middle of the desert, but I didn't complain. I walked about 700 meters and finally got to a swamp at close to sunset. I had to dig a hole as my first shelter. But I still played, and now my world is awesome.

The spawning did change in 1.8, yes, but only to where you don't spawn on sand. Meaning you have more chance of spawning by trees, and that you are greatly exaggerating.

If you have one then its a completely isolated, freak problem and there for isn't a problem.
