Two minor usability suggestions, not really related to each other:
1. With every command in the game requiring a leading / and needing to be entered in talk mode, how about having / automatically put you into talk mode?
(No, this is NOT as simple as just changing the 'talk' key to /. My point is I want to be able to just type '/say foo', '/kick player' instead of 't/say foo', 't/kick player'. The constant need to remember to prefix everything you type with a t gets irritating, particularly when doing complex work with, say, WorldEdit. What I'm after is the ability to enter commands that all start with a / as it is, without having to type a t first every time as well as the command prefix character.)
2. I'd really like to see the light from torches extend further (or have a better source of artificial light that spreads further), or some other mechanism for preventing monster spawn within designated areas. As it stands, if you're building any kind of large structure, you can't prevent monsters from spawning inside your structure except by covering every level surface in sight with completely ludicrous numbers of torches. The light from a torch placed four blocks up on a wall (yes, I frequently use four-block-high ceilings, trying for non-claustrophobic ambience here) is already dimming by the time it reaches the floor directly below the torch.
1) You can change the talk key already. It's under options
2) Try Lightstone/Glowstone in the ceiling/floor, it should provide enough light to stop monster spawns.

1. pressing "t" isn't really that hard, and in my opinion, pressing "/" is just as bad.
2. The torch is a good light source and unless your building something THAT big, a couple torches should cover ther area.

You and Neospector both missed the point. I don't mind hitting a key to talk. I don't mind hitting a key to enter a command. But having to remember to hit BOTH keys - first the "I'm going to type something now" key, then the "and it's going to be a command" key - gets old fast. The / that prefixes a command isn't used for anything else, and only does anything in talk mode. Would it really be so bad to have / automatically put you into talk/command mode if you're not already there? If commands have to be typed in talk mode, and I start typing a command, the game should know I need to be in talk mode and Just Do It.
Changing the talk key to / COMPLETELY misses the point. I already said that's not what I'm talking about. That just changes 't/say' to '//say', where all I SHOULD need to type is '/say'. And if I'm entering Worldedit commands, 't//replace' now becomes '///replace'. This is NOT an improvement.
Oh, and yeah, I am building something "that big". :smile.gif: I have a fortress with towers that are almost 40 blocks tall and 36 blocks across at the top. (Loosely based on Conwy castle in North Wales.) I have 72 torches on the top of each tower and I'm STILL getting occasional creeper and skeleton spawns.
1.thatd be annoying when you chat
2.too big of a light can lag
Why would it be annoying? It'd make no difference at all to chat. 'tHi!' would still be 'tHi!' The only change is when you entered a command, Minecraft would know you need to be in talk mode, so '/say Hi!' would have the same effect as 't/say Hi!' now. You'd still hit t (or whatever you had it set to) to get into talk mode for chatting. You just wouldn't need to hit the t as well as the / every time you wanted to type a command.

I like it, this is a very common feature in some MMOs I've played, where different keys are associated with chat related commands. You have your ordinary open chat button, but then if say you are sending/replying to a tell, you press the button associated with those and it automatically opens your chat bar with the appropriate leading command such at "/t name" with name being the name of who you are replying to. Much better than hitting the chat button, then typing out that bit manually.
If I am not mistaken the OP means that t would still open normal chat as you expect, but hitting / will also open chat but with a / already supplied into the chat line, to streamline entering commands a bit. Which is a good idea, and should be implemented.

Oh, I forgot to add earlier ... yeah, I thought about glowstone in the ceilings. The trouble is, in a large structure we're talking some really SERIOUS quantities of glowstone, and it seems to me like the light from glowstone starts out dimmer in the first place than a torch and doesn't reach as far. A 3x8 block panel of glowstone set into a 4-block-high ceiling (which is about the ceiling height that looks right visually) illuminates the floor under it scarcely more than a single torch right below the same ceiling does.
The really weird thing about glowstone ... have you ever noticed how a glowstone block will actually shade certain blocks placed right under it?

That's another way of stating it, yes.
