Minecraft's food system is very shabby. Its alot better than the old one and I love it, but it could be improved massively.
When you get poisoned from bad food, nothing happens except your food indicator turns green. You don't get food poisoning from any raw food. There are no apples that naturally spawn. You can't fry eggs. Food is boring and difficult to get if there's no animals. Not all animals drop food. Why?
Here are my suggestions concerning food:
- Apples should spawn from destroyed leaf blocks (1/8 chance) but they refill your food bar less
- Squids should drop squid meat which will look like tentacles
- Sheep will drop lamb chops
- The rate at which we get hungry should be doubled in order to balance out the new food sources
- When you get food poisoning, your health shouldn't regenerate and you should take double damage from everything, and also move at half speed
- All raw food and rotten meat gives you food poisoning when eaten no matter what
- Food poisoning lasts until death unless you drink an antidote potion
- Mushrooms should be edible, they will only heal 1 food icon though and if eaten there is a random chance that you will get food poisoning
- Grapes should be growable in soil that is next to sand and next to water, they can be crafted with a potion bottle into wine
- Carrots, tomatoes, garlic, and lettuce should be growable in the same way as wheat, and if you craft all 3 with a bowl, you make salad :tongue.gif:
- Seeds for said vegetables will be found in tall grass and found when you destroy fully grown versions of them
- If you craft garlic with bread, you make garlic bread, which heals more health than normal bread :biggrin.gif:
- If you craft a porkchop with a shear on the crafting grid, you will make 6 strips of bacon (but your shears will lose 12 uses)
I wouldn't really call the food system bad, I think it is pretty balanced already (food saturation) but I really like these ideas. OH SHH-- IT'S A CACODEMON!

But, to be honest you can eat raw beef, i do it at my dads all the time and im fine, and there are so many food types already why do we need another load? Apples are meant to be rare, only to be found in strongholds, which makes the game a lot more rewarding in my opinion
Apples should be findable all over the place, its golden apples that should be rare. :smile.gif:
If meat is edible raw, then there is no point in cooking it in minecraft.
The load of new food types is to add variety to the game and also make it easier/funner. Once yesterday I spawned in a swamp with no animals and only squid and I almost starved. :sad.gif: It was a PVP server so I couldn't really move around too much without getting my ass kicked

Why I disagree:
1: the rate at which you lose currently hunger varies. the more damage you take the faster you become hungry. the more you work the faster you become hungry (unconfirmed by me). if you just double it then hunger may become too invaisve and become more of a burden then a cool addition.
2: thats very very overpowered. it gives you almost no chance of survial. perhaps instead no health regen, no sprint, and reduced amount of hunger removed from food.
3: raw food is a crucial part of minecraft. many times raw food is the chance at a players survial. they only have to kill an animal and there it is. if you have to cook all meat then you have to always have a furnace which is somehting no one wants to have to constantly carry around.
4: normal poison doesn't even last that long first of all. second that makes hunger to much of a burden. third potions so far seem to be made of rather rare materials a begining player wouldn't stand a chance. (based on latest info. see wiki).
5: I do agree that seeds should be found in tall grass, but with a certain stipulation and addition. Either have seeds drop based on biome (EX. wheat seeds drop in plains and forest biome)or have a chance for each different seed to be dropped. also wheat can grow wild and sometimes gets mixed in with wild grass (thats why we get wheat seeds from grass) perhaps a few plants (vegitables) should grow in the wild and assorted other plants (grasses, weeds, bushes) could drop some other vegitable seeds.
-pumpkins can be hollowed out to get pulp and seeds as well as to make a hat or jack-o-lantern
-apple foods: pie, cider
-potatoes and corn
They are rather assorted, but I felt they were reasonable.
EDIT: also based on your last post cooking food increases the amount it increases the hunger bar. players really do need raw foods for when they are in a really bad situation.
where are you getting the idea that raw food doesn't poison you? i got food poisoning four times since 1.8.1 from chicken, then steak, matter of fact their wiki even has an article about uncooked foods and they have a chance of poisoning you 1/10 times if i remember right, as for everything else i agreed with jason some things are good others are over powered
One thing that bothers me is that meats have to be cooked, but you can just mash a bunch of ingredients together and have a fully formed cake pop out. Or a loaf of bread, or cookies, or stew...
I think either one of two things should be done to rectify this.
1) Furnaces should be for smelting only and a new object (cook fire? oven?) will be made for cooking. The new object would combine the 3x3 grid of a crafting table and the fuel square of a furnace.
Or 2) Recipes such as cake or bread would now yield "Cake Batter", or "Bread Dough" and those now need to be cooked to yield the finished product.
Of the two, I personally prefer the first option, but the second seems like it would be simpler and more likely.
Furnaces are unsuitable for cooking and only yield Charred Meat or Charred Fish, which only restores one hunger, but has no chance of food poisoning.
To properly cook, you need an Oven. The oven is made as follows:
The oven would have a 3x3 craft grid and a fuel slot. It is only used for making food. All cooked foods would have to be made in the Oven.
(TwistedNerve and I seem to think alike...)
Meat or fish alone makes grilled foods like you can currently make. Meat + Wood gives you Jerky. It only restores one hunger, but you get four pieces (so you can waste less). Smoked Fish is made the same way as Jerky. It only gives you one piece, but restores two more hunger than Grilled Fish. Chicken surrounded by Wheat produces Stuffed Chicken, which works like a Cake with fewer "servings".
Pumpkin used in a recipe like Cake (pumpkin replacing either egg or one of the milk buckets) gives you Pumpkin Pie, which is basically just a different version of Cake. Using pumpkin with two wheat like a Cookie recipe gives you Pumpkin Bread. In a pinch, any seeds can be cooked to make a one-hunger restoring food, Baked Seeds.
