I was sailing around in a river and even in our current boats, it took me a while to traverse half of the river. I was looking for snow (and I found anything one can see on the surface, excluding snow) to make an igloo (just for decoration, I wasn't going for snow to get a house). I would have gone out into the ocean, but my boat was small and I was going into a huge area. I was thinking how to improve it when I came across these ideas: Stronger Boats Going up the other half of the river, my boat broke on a narrow part that I wanted to cross. I was thinking about stronger boats. I came up with reinforcing a boats hull. I think this (replace the iron with any material you can use for tools, except for wood and stone. Also, any metals here work for this, as long as they don't explode when coming in contact with water. Infinium reinforcements make it never ever bust, and behave like a block for collecting purposes): is a good idea, but I want feedback. The stronger boat would have more health than most boats. A stronger material means a stronger boat. It would move slightly slower, dependent on the weight (gold would slow it down more than most stuff).
Bigger Boats While I was looking for the snow, I wanted to have more inventory space in case the snow biome was big (which I knew it would be since I was using 1.8.1) and I got a lot of snow in it (unfortunately, I couldn't find the snow). I was thinking about combining boats by making sticky boats like this: . They stick to any boats that hit them. You can use any boat for the middle boat. I was in SSP so a boat that holds more people wouldn't matter. I was wanting a boat that has inventory space. You would make a storage boat like this: . They work like storage minecarts, but are a boat and therefore stick to sticky boats. You also could make a powered boat like this:
. Powered boats can use coal to speed up it and attached boats. They work like powered minecarts, only are a boat, only use fuel when the boat is applying thrust, and can go in any direction. Boats with a crafting station would also be nice. You craft them like this:
. They are boats, only have a crafting station (useful if you want to make a boat sticky or if you want your boat bigger).
How Crafting the new boats would work You can craft any boat for any crafting recipe listed here for a combination of the 2 (except for reinforcing sticky boats, which just gives a reinforced boat, but you can make a reinforced boat sticky). In addition, boats will need to be able to be placed on other boats for it to work. There also are telescope boats, made by combining a telescope (of any level) with a boat. You can not have combined boats (like a storage-powered or a telescope-storage etc. etc.) but can sit in a telescope boat. Telescopes How are telescopes and boats related? Telescopes are related to boats in many ways The first way Telescopes are related to boats in that telescopes are commonly used to look for land, other boats and what the other boats are signaling (with the flag signaling system).
The Second Way The second way telescopes are related to boats is in another way they are used. I live in the northern hemisphere. If I wanted to study the sothern cross (which only appears in the sothern hemisphere), I would probably take a boat down there and study it. How to make telescopes You would craft a telescope segment like this: . Once you make a telescope segment, you can either put 1, 2, or 3 telescope segments along the top (with 1 in the middle and all of them together) and put a stick in the center, followed by a stick in the lower corners to get a level 1, 2, or 3 telescope respectively. You could also combine 3 into a big telescope segment. Place the segments how you would a regular segment and you will get a level 3, 6, or 9 telescope for 1, 2, or 3 big sections respectively. You can combine big telescope sections into a huge telescope section. Huge telescope sections give 9 levels per section. You can combine huge telescope sections into ginormous sections. They give 27 levels per section. You can combine the ginormous telescope sections into gargantuan sections. They give 81 levels per section. How the telescopes work Telescopes in minecraft penetrate any fog. They render anything you are looking at within their range. To determine their range, take the level. Add 1. Multiply by the render distance (in chunks). You now have the range of the telescope. It wouldn't lag a lot unless you cover the whole range because they only load whatever you see that is in the range (and the image gets multiplied by the level of the telescope plus 1 so you can see it). How to use a telescope You can use a telescope by right-clicking on one. It makes the edges appear blacked out (the screen becomes a circle). They will move with your cursor while looking at one. They always appear to be pointing away from the player was when placed. 3rd person mode won't work while looking through one. When looking at one, anything within 32 blocks is very blurry Binoculars How are they related to boats They are related to boats in the same way telescopes are. How to craft them You craft each section the same way as a telescope section, and they are interchangeable. You place an iron ingot in the middle and telescope sections on top and bottom. The rules for positioning are just like that for a telescope, but there must be an equal amount both above AND below the iron ingot and they must be in the same formation. How binoculars work Binoculars work just like telescopes, but they have 1/2 effective levels and they zoom in 2 times as much as telescopes. They also don't make anything blurry.
Compass Don't we already have one? Yes, we already have a compass. But not the one I am suggesting. How to make this type and how they work This compass is crafted like this: . It will tell you the angle you are looking at (with 0 degrees the horizon and a positive number above the horizon). It can also tell you direction you are looking at with 0 degrees the north if you craft it like this:
. It will give you a degrees amount when held in the hand and the angle shown by the devise in the hot bar also shows the degrees.
Basic Turrets not the automatic kind The turrets would be crafted like this: . They can use arrows (for a half charged bow shot at no charge and a fully charged bow shot at 1 second charged), cannonballs (crafted like this: , they do 5 damage and an explosion with 0.5 blast power at no charge and 7.5 damage and 1 blast power at 1 second charge), and fists of fury (crafted like this: , 10 damage and 3 blast power period). The person using it right clicks on it and sits in the turret. Then, he loads the ammo box (holds 2 stacks of ammo, appears in a non-constricting GUI in the bottom left corner) and fires away like it is a bow. If you combine it so that it is on a boat, right click to sit in the boat and control the turret. They have a 0.2 second reload whether in a boat or not.
Also, on the forums is a good idea I saw about this same exact idea (better boats) with a whole new approach to making it. Check it out here.
They really aren't that weak (just as much health as a minecart), but they get hurt very easily so they seem weak (and for all practical uses, they are weak).

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.
Just include the airship mod, and with a few tweaks, one could make all of the magnificent (yet static) tall ships out there instantly come to life. With huge ocean biomes, why not allow us huge sailing ships?

I don't see why one would want ships to be tall since you don't need much space for steve to move around and that would just do unnecesary weight and size.

I totally agree that there has to be better boats, but I think that some real world crafting should be involved aswell, so you could tie together boats in a "train" with rope, including propulsion boats to pull the train aloing, or perhaps once you bolt together 9 minimum boats together, you can place blocks on those boats, allowing massive ships so that you can carry large hauls over the ocean. Imagine the PvP possiblilties! Two massive galleons firing at eachother with TNT cannons and fire arrows, wouldn't that be epic?
That would be epic, but with my idea they would be huge with turrets, telescopes, motors, slimeballs instead of rope, chests, and tons of people.
