The basic jist of this suggestion is to be able to craft the basic blocks: Gravel, Sand, Dirt, and Clay. I think there should be many more renewable elements in Minecraft, but even more importantly, gravel should be farmable, right?
So, you start out with just some water and stone (or maybe cobblestone instead), and you simply place the water so that the flowing water passes over or by the stone. After a while, the stone will automatically turn into gravel. If you leave it there, the gravel will eventually turn into sand. This is also good because it creates beaches naturally, (which are either sand or gravel if you haven't noticed).
To get clay, you have to place gravel underneath water, over time the water will mix in etc. and become clay!
Not sure how dirt should be craftable, probably either clay or sand with a sapling or seed.

To get dirt you need to get some seeds, and combine them with clay balls in a 2x2 crafting grid, simple!
Any suggestions or changes?
i agree- dont understand seeds & clay though
water above dirt-> mud
there should be a sort of sedimentary rock which would erode straight to red clay
then i could build construcion site w/ both curriencies
Realisticly i think its stone>cobblestone>gravel>(maybe dirt)>sand>clay. Although dirt is usually more finer than sand so might switch thosue two, not include dirt in that mix. And clay is just really fine, so maybe have clay start to form under surface sand? While it is annoying to try and find dirt when you need it/not want to screw up the landscape. I dont think water errosion would be the way to get it. Maybe make it so while mineing you get gravel and cobblestone from stone (makes sense) and add dirt as a chance to drop from digging gravel. ('omg noes then we get too much stuff', q button...) I think dirt with nothing above it should become mud when underwater (take some time to hydrate like farmland) and could be used to make mudbrick/adobe.
