Anything that is redstone affected or related should be able to have their color changed. (this would include minecart tracks) The idea is that if you color certain objects that color, then it would only affect those of the same color. Following me? Here's an example:
= Door = Redstone wiring
:Flint and Steel: = Levers
:Flint and Steel: :Flint and Steel:
Obviously, hitting one of the switches would open both doors. That would be pointless then.
But, what if there was a line down the middle splitting them? Let's say all the wiring on the left side was dyed yellow. It would do the same thing, but it would be on a completely different path, and they wouldn't connect or intervene even though they're right next to each other.
These would be easily crafted by butting the dye ontop of the redstone item in the crafting menu
I would also like to introduce the tranformer. This block would would look quite similar to the repeater, but would have two large spheres on a pole on each end. They would be gray until you assigned what colors it's transforming by going to a right click menu. (you need to put dyes into the box for it to work). There would be six different colors, for I feel that any more could be confusing and unimportant. They would also give off the light of a redstone torch when powered.
So, ummm... That's it! Please leave a comment if you will about what you liked, or disliked about my absolutely wonderful idea!

Yes, this would be desired in the vanilla game, and is a common desire.
Because it hasn't happened yet, we had mods.
While the RedPower mod is constantly noted, the more simple mod was Colorful Redstone, which lays down a good example of implementing the idea in vanilla, very similarly to what you suggest.
Both are currently outdated, so that doesn't really help us out much in being able to test the idea out in current versions.
I have to agree, I would still love to see this idea make it into the vanilla game.

Dude, this isn't in the mods suggestions forum. So no, it actually hasn't happened.
He's not looking for a mod...

It is report able if they do not provide a link to said mod.
