Pumpkins were added in the Halloween Update. Melons are added in the Adventure Update. Pumpkins basically do one thing: creep you out with that silly grin. Melons you can eat so they don't grin. Let's wipe that grin off that pumpkin: PUMPKIN SOUP!
For pumpkin soup, we totally need bowls. So throw that mushroom stew out the window and clean the bowls out. Now, what we need is cream. Yup, cream of pumpkin soup. Well, to avoid too much coding, milk will do.
If you push a cow into the water, they will get h**ny and produce more milk. Now GET IN THE WATER, cow! Get h**ny! -PaperbatVG
Right, after you get the milk, plonk that pumpkin on top of the bucket of milk in the crafting table. Voila, cream of pumpkin-in a bucket. Well, you can drink the whole thing all at once, but I suggest you put some bowls underneath the bucket (one bucket will fill 4 bowls). Oh, almost forgot. If you like cold soup, go ahead and drink it, but if you want it hot and heal more, go put the bucket in a furnace. NO, NOT THE BOWL-Oh, never mind. Hopefully no one notices the smell of burnt wood.
Do note though, your pumpkin soup will NOT stack. I mean come on, who can stack bowls of pumpkin soup on top of each other? Luckily, Minecraft does not obey the second rule of thermodynamics, which means your hot pumpkin soup won't go cold. No, you still can't stack the soup.

Seems pretty complicated, and mushroom soup needs fixing as it is, but I do like the pie idea. Since cake currently the only placeable food item in the game, pie has the opportunity to fill a niche by being like cake but much cheaper to make.
I want to be able to make pumpkin pie personally. But, any food made from pumpkin would be great. Why bother to grow them when they're only good for snow golems and jack-o-lanterns? Considering how much is made from pumpkin this time of year, at least in the US *not sure if it's as common where Notch and the company are* there should be some kind of food to get from them!
