A redstone oriented block that would make so many options viable.
BASICS
The conveyor block (CB) will move players, mobs, dropped items, and solid blocks along it's path. It's path is oriented towards the placer at the time of its deployment, in the likeness of stairs, chests, and furnaces. It will not move redstone, redstone torches, torches, and other nonsolid blocks for the convenience of the user so that redstone/etc. can be used under it to maintain it.
Each CB will remain inactive until it is provided with an adjacent redstone power source, in which case it will begin function. CB's will not be linked in a chain by one redstone power source, and instead they must all must be individually powered as for more control over their functions.
The speed of the movement is determined by the strength of the redstone power source. The highest power level will slightly outspeed players, with each lower level growing weaker until redstone current is lost.
As expected, CB's will transfer any entities that move from one CB to another. Otherwise said entities would just be stuck at the edge, which would make it fairly pointless.
Slimeballs can be used on CB's in order to make Sticky CB's (SCB's). SCB's will keep any entities on them, even if they are transporting them vertically, and will transfer entities over the edge of a SCB if there is nothing else available for them to land on. In opposition, normal CB's will not have any effect on any entities that touch its sides.
CRAFTING RECIPE
(still debatable)
Where TNT=Redstone.
This recipe will give you 4 CB's.
For a SCB:
Where Furnace=CB and Wool=Slimeball. This yields 4 SCB's.
USES
-The creation of block "factories". Since CB's can move solid blocks along their paths, CB's can be used in conjunction with pistons to allow for the systemic production of various blocks including (but not limited to) cobblestone, wood, and ice.
-Transportation. CB's can be used to create both horizontal and oblique escalators that can speed up movement for players. As opposed to minecarts, they are one directional and require more redstone detail, which means that they will not replace them.
-Mob traps and player traps. Should an unfortunate player or mob get stuck in a track of CB's, they are at the mercy of whatever lies at the end, be it a lava blade or pitfall.
-Item collectionl. Once a mob/player/block is killed/mined, their items can be brought to a collection point.
-Aethstetics. Treadmills, anyone?
AND MUCH, MUCH MORE!
FAQ
Q:Wouldn't a channel of water serve the same purposes?
A:No. CB's will allow for the movement of entities much more efficiently. Consider the following.
-Water channels require dips in altitude every 8 blocks for item transportation. CB's do not and they can be used to create long chains that do not change in Y. They can also bring items UP if they are sticky, something water cannot do.
-To transport mobs to traps, one must add signs or pressure plates every 8 blocks, or use dips in altitude in the same matter. CB's do not require this.
-Water cannot transport solid blocks. CB's can.
-Water can cause flooding and thus is not suited to houseold/outdoor usage. CB's do not have such a side effect.
Q:Can't this be used to abusive levels if factories are made?
A:Something as simple as a cobblestone factory would require the use of a cobblestone generator, several pistons to get them on the track, a track itself, and then a dedicated miner at the end. Anything that can be considered even close to overpowered needs a lot of work to reach accomplishment, and is fair.
Q:Already suggested.
A:Not to my knowledge and not to this level of detail.
Q:This would only be good for a mod.
A:Just like pistons were a mod and then became part of Minecraft.
Q:Too modern.
A:It is made of wood and stone in the same shadow as pistons are.
Q:Already a mod.
A:I didn't like it's execution. The mod is basically one movement block while the rest is sort of like ice, making it pretty absent of redstone and other cool features. Stating this is also against the rules.
Post away. Please be considerate and fully constructive if you find fault with it.
Great idea, man! I would really love to see this, because my house is high up in a mountain, and if I try to get down, I lose over 4 hearts! (Thus, why I added stairs).
Made already. Just had to read the title. Sorry to put you down.
I didn't like the execution in the mod. It didn't involve much redstone outside the usage of other mod features like the automatic crafting table, for one.
Plus I find this idea more suitable for plain Minecraft.

You know there is a rule posting "there is a mod for that" or posts with similar meanings in the suggestion forums?
