Since the 1.8 update, Notch changed the void texture and add some particles into it. Ok, no big deal with that, it's doesn't really matter... But the BIG problem is that we can see those void particles and the lighting is completely screwed after layer 12 and below. Seriously, WTF Notch? Why would you make this? What's the purpose of that??? Anyway, I just find it REALLY annoying and I suggest that the old blue void should be brought back. It is really annoying because we built a really large city with high buildings in our server. In order to make the buildings tall, we didn't have other choices than starting them at the bedrock layer considering the extremely low map height (which I also suggest to be changed).

I like the idea of the new one, but you're right about the lighting effects being a little severe. It's kind of handy to know when you're near the bottom, though, so I think some of the darkness and definitely the particles should be kept.

Also, I'm pretty sure Notch has said that the level height will be staying the same but will be dependent on just a single variable so it can be changed by a simple mod. This is because the height can be a real resource suck, especially with a server needing to send all that extra information around.
I kinda like it. The point of the particles is that the deeper you go, the more dust there is in the air. The particles simulate the dust and dims the lighting. It makes deep caves a bit more realistic and creepy.

I dont mind the particles and fog, but i hate how both come up above the bedrock layer.
Same for me, I wouldn't mind if the black void, the particles and the fog were staying BELOW bedrock, but now it's just screwing up our city and it's pretty much a big problem for my friends and me since we passed a really long time building this city.
