Minecraft's wilderness and caverns are full of undead creatures: zombies, skeletons, zombie pigmen, creepers (maybe?). Where do these monsters come from? Ancient texts found in abandoned libraries or dungeon chests speak of an evil immortal entity who creates and controls the undead scourge:
The Necromancer.
The Necromancer lives in an imposing tower built of obsidian and nether brick in a weak point between the worlds, where the Nether has begun to seep into the overworld. His tower sits in a depression far below sea level, and it reaches far into the sky above. Within, there are unimaginable riches and hordes of the Necromancer's undead minions. At the very peak of the tower resides the Necromancer himself, wielding an artifact of incredible power that grants him dominion over the world's dead.
Wow, sounds extremely awesome. I would definitely play this mod.

I use a mix of Dokucraft The Saga Continues and JohnSmith, and create personalized textures for both. Some of my submissions can be found in the Dokucraft Customizer located http://www.minecraft...saga-continues/
It would work as a mod, but it's something I'd like to see implemented in the full game. I guess I should make that a little clearer!
Just based on what I've seen in the "vanilla" game and what I've seen from good mod authors. This idea would probably be better off as a mod. The "vanilla" game isn't even done yet. they've still got 2 or 3 more patches before it becomes "version 1".
In the finished minecraft notch stated that there would be a comprehensive mod API. That would make doing something like this extremely easy to work into the existing game.
My opinion is that, while an amazing idea(props to you), I don't think this would work as well as you suggest in the vanilla Minecraft

Would not work in Vanilla, simply because Minecraft is a sandbox game. I would possibly play it in a currently nonexistent objective mode.
In no way are you forced to confront the Necromancer. You can choose to do so or not, and if you do, the game continues as normal, except now you have the staff which you can also choose to use or not. I don't see how this could possibly change Minecraft other than for the better.
You might want to alter the description from 'End game' then.
Fair enough. Instead of endgame I called it a long-term goal, and added a paragraph near the end of the article to clarify that beating the Necromancer does not end the game.
A suggested long-term goal for Minecraft
