String is currently a very practical material with no real decorative uses (crafting wool out of it is pointless now that sheep regrow their wool). So I thought of a neat aesthetic use for it that shouldn't be too difficult to implement.
Basically, if you hold down the right-click on your mouse while string is selected in your inventory, little points will pop up on the block you're pointed at, like so:
Then you'll be able to select one, and release the cursor. Then you can move around the mouse and select another point on a similar block. Right-click again and your string line is complete! (note: image shows more than one. also I made it in MS Paint so no it's not real)
I'll put more pictures up later, right now I'm squeezed for time. Also: dyed string?
Please reply, I think this is a pretty good idea. (But please don't just post redundant crap like "+1 i suport" - I like real posts.)
DIAGONAL LINES?!?! MADNESS.
On another note, there should be a max for the amount of points you can put down, because having twenty lines with one string connecting to five blocks doesn't seem plausible.
How exactly would this work? I think in the current system it would have to be a String "block" that is basically an air block with the string through it. If my math is right there would be 16 different ways 2 blocks spaced one block apart can be connected. That would be fine if you could only have one string in the gap between two blocks at a time, as the damage value for that block could be anything 0-15 (16 total).
But if you wanted more than that (say, connecting 2 blocks in every way possible) You would need 16! spots for the damage value, which totals out to 20922789888000 possible combinations if my theory and my math is accurate.
I suppose it could be done with entities, but I'm not sure how.

Okay I like it, though I doubt it would actually get added. But there definitely needs to be a limit somehow. If these are entities or just a single line somehow drawn I could see it causing lots of lag.

Serious feedback:
I like the idea, i can think of some pretty cool ideas, it would be cool to make hot air balloons and such using this string as a part
