Idea 1: My idea is to add the 0 button (or use the 1 button) to the scrollbar at the bottom of your screen. By default, items you pick up won't go in that box automatically, but you can click and drag them into it. Now for the main part of the idea, When you put a tool/sword/bow in that box, you could equip it as normal as any other hotkey, but when you un-equip it, it goes on your characters back.
or, it could go like this-
Idea 2: You equip the tool/weapon in an area near your charater in the inventory, and then it shows up on your back, and you press 0 to equip/ un-equip it.
If you don't like the idea, please post saying why. I don't like when people don't give a good reason for not liking something.
There's danger around every corner in Minecraft. What's Steve gonna do when he hears the dreaded hiss and his sword is on his back?
have it out when he's exploring?
But I had an idea similar to this. Maybe you can equip swords, bows, and (if added) shields in the armor slots (Maybe adopt the aether mod's equipment idea, and modify it.) By pressing, say, x, c, and v, you could pull out your tools equipped to that slot, and the tools would be shown either on your back (bows, shields) or on your hip, like a sheathe, for swords or picks. Shields would be held in the left hand, so you could have it out with you sword. By pressing the respective key, it would equip the item in that slot, and put the current item away. Pressing the key the item was bound to can put it back on your body. I think all items (not blocks) would be equippable, because it would be pretty funny to see someone loaded up with steak and rotten flesh.

You can't make metre cubed pieces of rock get jiggy with each other, that's just WRONG.
