The farming system in Minecraft is grossly underdeveloped, but it has tons of untapped potential. Here are some ideas that would make Farmville look like Pong!
Warning: My topics tend to intertwine with each other. This one, for example, makes references to my Noms post. You might want to read all of them.
A new animal farming system, with all new blocks and items!
-Mud: Bare dirt blocks with water adjacent to or directly below them will turn to mud. It has a slowing effect similar to that of Soul Sand. Pigs are drawn to it, and they have a higher chance of spawning in it. If the water near it is removed, Mud will turn back to Dirt. Mud drops Dirt when mined.
-Trough: A 3-block-long item created using 3 Wooden Planks and 3 Bowls. It can be filled with various animal food.
-Clover: A ground cover found in Meadow biomes. It is similar to Snow in placing behavior. It spreads slowly across grass blocks. You can mine it with Shears and place it on any grass block. Clover attracts Cows and Sheep, and the cow and sheep spawn rates are increased on it.
-Straw: A new farmland-grown crop. Seeds can be found in villages, as well as in dungeon and mineshaft chests. They are dropped by Straw when it is harvested.
-Hay: A ground cover block. Chickens are drawn to it, and have a higher chance of spawning in it. It is created by placing Straw on any block except transparent ones.
-Sunflower: A farmland-grown crop. Sunflowers drop large amounts of Sunflower Seeds when harvested. Seeds can also be found in villages, as well as mineshaft and dungeon chests.
UPDATE 1
Feeding System!
Animals eat once a Minecraft day. When an animal eats, a number will appear over its head. This counts how many times it has eaten. The higher the number, the higher the chance it will breed. A higher number also means a higher number of drops upon death.
-Burlap bag: A sack made from Straw and Tall Grass. It stores animal feed and can be reused. Bags of feed can be used to fill Troughs. Each fill provides 5 units of feed.
-Chicken feed: Crafted from Corn kernels (see Noms), Sunflower seeds, Wheat seeds, Straw seeds, and a burlap bag. It is used to feed Chicken.
-Cow feed: Crafted from Clover, Tall Grass, Straw, Wheat, and a burlap bag. It is used to feed Cows.
A worthy mention, dont forget Minecraft is going to be released this November. He may not overhaul something like this beforehand. But who knows' they have surprised us before.
I like it, but how do you suppose it would fit with the new animal breeding that should be coming soon? A plus is that mud could naturally generate in swamps, as it is they don't feel swampy enough. Maybe mud could naturally grow some sort of moss on it like dirt grows grass?
