Seriously map icons would be great. They would not be automatic like in oblivion or other open-world games, you would have to place them manually. But it would allow you to come back to spots in the world without jotting down the xyz location. I have lost so many good mines because I did not get the xyz location. All i'm thinking to place a map marker is to right-click with the map up, then you select the right icon from a small list of like 10 icons. we don't even really need new icons the ones we use in our Achievement banners are fine.
Color-Coded or named points on the map? or placing a certain wool block will mark its location on the map. This way, you can have different colored markers on the map, but to avoid confusion you have to craft the wool block with one redstone. Like this-
Red Wool + Redstone = Red Map Marker.
When you place this block, it will make a large red square on the map showing its location.

Sounds Good? =3
Having in-world map marker objects could get cluttered in multiplayer games. Plus if I fined a good cave I go to some lengths so no one can find it but me...
