Crafting and smelting books are special books that record recipes. As long as the book is in your inventory, the recipe is recorded, and you can easily acces it without closing your window. Plus, other people will be able to tell when your looking up a recipe, because the player will be in a reading animation while holding the book. ALl that's needed to craft these books are red and blue dyes, and books. The red dye is crafted with a book to make the crafting book, and the blue dye to make the smelting book.
I much rather just have books you can write (type) in.
PS. Carfting?
That's you. I presonally dislike having to close the game's window, to open up another window, got to a specific page, and look through that page for a recipe.
To be honest the process (if implemented) would still be a hassle, reasons why:
1) Players that do not know how to craft things initially will have problems collecting sugar cane, making paper and then making a book. These are most likely the players who will be using the books.
2) It will even be harder on said people if they must find rose red and lapis lazuli blue dyes to put in said books.
If it were put into the game it should already be in the inventory and should remember recipes you have crafted as well as provide helpful tips into crafting new items. Part of the fun in Minecraft is the creation process of new items, when I started playing it took me a fair while to learn how to make a furnace... Good times.

I suppose the main purpose is for those who easiliy forget the recipes they make. I hardly remember how to make cake.

I think you might be on the wrong thread.
