Ever wished you could set a boat down without dying in the Nether? Well, if boats made from more materials, like Obsidian were possible, then sailing the hot lava seas should be possible.
Boats made from Obsidian should be able to take lava immunity, since... it's made from lava. Though, because we're talking about sailing on lava, it's obviously going to be slower, and you'd be taking a risk every time you exit the boat. Also, there is the distinct possibility that getting off the boat will make it move away. It would be made by substituting obsidian for wood.
If somehow you end up breaking the boat, you get three obsidian, and two sticks. Damage:
Other ideas for boats: Stone boat
They would take damage from being in lava, but they would be good for a limited time (Say, one day's time). When they break in water, three stone and two sticks can be retrieved. Double durability.
Iron boats
These boats would be made from blocks of iron, which would mean you would need 45 blocks of iron to produce one. Not that hard, considering when excavating an abandoned mine, I can end up getting more than one full stack of iron ore. Unusable in lava, but triple durability in water. Yields random 9-18 iron ingots when destroyed.
Gold boats
Since I am suggesting metals, I would be remissed if I didn't mention this. But why would you take the most valuable substance in the game and turn it into a boat? Needs 45 gold (9 blocks), double and a half durability. Burns up in lava. Yields random 9-18 gold ingots when destroyed.
Alternatively, since gold is a good conductor of electricity, I guess gold boats can get a speed boost if Redstone dust is in the middle, thus making the boat magically powered by it's own electric current, and making it glide faster in the water. So there's the incentive. Yields 9-18 gold ingots and no redstone. (Gotta love Minecraft logic.)
Leather boat, AKA the canoe
You could, but why? Requires 5 cow leather. Moves faster due to less weight, but half the durability of a regular wooden boat. Only yields 3 leather when destroyed.
Diamond boat
Requires 45 diamond. Practically invincible. You can ride this boat in lava without it taking any damage, and it's difficult to destroy in the water. Sails in lava the same as in water, unlike obsidian boats. Yields 9-18 diamoned when destroyed.
The only difficult part about this is, having all these different boats. But with Minecraft having different armors, different picks ant the like, this seems like little issue.
Far as how much stone boats would be damaged from use in lava, I would say it would take 1 damage every 2 minecraft hours, since I have stone listed as double the durability of wood, wood should be 6 damage, meaning, it can hit the wall at full speed six times before breaking.
Other things
Boats should look like they ARE taking damage. The boats should have cracks along the bottom and the sides, be chipped, have holes in the sides, etc. etc. as a visual indicator of how close the boat is to breaking. For the metal boats, their break pattern would be different, showing the boats dented up and breaking at the seams.
i like the diamond boat, exept replace that with iron. because thats not worth it. and the canoue is pretty cool. good effort though, great post. enjoy your rep! and the cracking is a great idea, and can be made in a mod, with ease.
I like the idea.
I think it would be good to use 5 diamond for a diamond boat that can sail in lava. Maybe include a diamond boat using 5 diamond blocks that will never break as an alternative. Also, I would like to think I can reclaim my diamond boat and move to a new lake without it breaking... So similar to a minecart.
Didn't Notch say that he was planning to have minecarts be lava boats? There's your iron/lava boat right there if he ever gets to it.I think we should have boats similar to the zeppelin mod with flowing rivers so we can have a grand adventure to oblivion!

My rationale was to NOT have metal in lava, as it doesn't seem fesible that minecarts would be used as a lava raft. Now I know Minecraft is not real life, but realistically metal melts and bends and becomes useless in high temperatures, while stone, hot as it may get, doesn't sound all that useless as a lava raft.
And the reason I said blocks of material instead of the material itself for the diamond boat is because it sounds like end-game stuff, so it should be something an experienced player who got a 64-stack of diamond legitimately should do, instead of the noob that happens upon 5 diamond ore blocks, and say "YAY! I CAN HAS LAVA BOAT!" then they go down a lava waterfall and "OH **** I AM ON FIAR!!! NOOO! NOOO! I GONNA DIE! **** I DIED!"

Not random boxes that fly along the water for no apparent reason. Boats; Vehicles with sails or paddles that are used as water transportation.
