This is a MUCH SMALLER biome, extending maybe 50 blocks away from the center in all directions. Netherrack, soul sand, and glowstone spawn in this area. In the center, a Nether portal can be found, teleporting Nether mobs through it. Also, any mobs which enter the biome change into more powerful forms.
Pigs will turn into Zombie Pigmen. Spiders become Demon Spiders (red spiders with more health and faster movement). Creepers become "Possessed Creepers", glowing red creepers that do more damage and will charge at you if they see you. Skeletons become a new mob called a "Revenant" which has more health, and uses an iron sword when he gets in melee range. Revenants will be distinguished by a burning skull, but otherwise look just like normal skeletons. Zombies become Dark Knights and get armor plus a diamond sword. I don't know about the enderman. Chickens and cows die.
The nether forms of the mobs will be able to go through the portal. After going through the portal, you will meet several nether mobs guarding a red block. If you survive the battle and get to the block, you can mine it. It will lead to 4 other similar blocks. After taking them all, they can be crafted into a new type of armor/tools.
That's just my idea, but I think a small adventure with a reward would be fun, especially in the mysterious world of the nether.

I think this is a pretty awesome idea. Sounds just like an Oblivion Gate from the Elder Scrolls game. The only thing I wouldn't want is Ghasts in the overworld. That would get annoying pretty quick.
(1)A new player could go to the nether as soon as he/she starts.
(2)Ghast in the main world would be a bad idea.
He's right. Ghasts are annoying enough in the nether.
Also, I like that you have to have diamond tools before you go in the Nether (unless you play on a server or you create each obsidian block with water and lava in its place on the frame)

How about we just have the mobs spawn in the biome rather then using the portal? We could just not allow ghasts to do that.
Yes, this was inspired from the Elder Scrolls series, by the way. Following that inspiration, how about you get teleported to a sort of nether dungeon or fortress when you go through?
Personally, I don't think the Nether should be something only available to the best equipped players. It's no more challenging, and it's possible to get in there without the diamond tools anyway.

Why not just have a nether portal with netherrack spilling out in a few places, along with some lava?
i like this suggestion
