The Nazca Lines are giant and ancient drawings carved into the dirt of the Peruvian deserts. The "geoglyphs" are so immense that they can only be seen from high altitudes.
People formed them about 1,500 years ago by scraping away the top layer of pebbles, revealing different colored ground beneath. The arid desert environment prevented them from being worn away.
I think it would be awesome to have something like this in Minecraft.
What if desert biomes occasionally spawned giant drawings in the ground, consisting of thin lines of dirt or gravel set on the surface amidst the sand. The flat 2D drawings would vary greatly in size from being just a single chunk in size, to several chunks, to rare ones that are so large they can only be seen as a complete image on maps.
What would the drawings show? Abstract designs, images of Minecraft critters and monsters, crafting table recipes, cryptic/funny messages from Notch, Scrolls alpha codes. Basically whatever Mojang wants to include. Just imagine the joy in climbing over a sand dune and discovering a massive dirt creeper staring up at you from the sandy ground.
And don't worry about them spoiling the natural beauty of deserts. Just like towns and dungeons, glyphs would be fairly rare and discovering one would be a special and only occasional treat.
Also perhaps sometimes (but not always) the geoglyphs could provide hints to the location of strongholds and dungeons. For example you might see an immense pigman pointing in one direction, and a stronghold would be located beneath the tip of his finger.

What if they glowed like redstone at night, but blue? :ohmy.gif:
