(This is my first post in suggestions, so go easy on me.)
Minecraft is getting experience and skills soon, probably in 1.10.
I don't want Minecraft to turn into an RPG, but I have a way to implement skills without making it too RPG-ish.
It's like this:
Each player could have 2 different skills: an active skill and a passive skill. When you spawn/respawn, you start with NO skills.
Every time you level up, you get to make a few choices. First, whether to change the Active or Passive skill. Then, you pick which way you want to advance; There could be a (not too large) Skill Tree, with skills like increasing arrow range (passive) or jumping really high (active). You could also go backwards on the Tree if you wanted, in case you wanted to try a different branch. But here's the catch: No matter what, you can only have two skills at a time. And the only time you get to alter your skills is when you level up. So if you get a new skill, you have to ditch the old one.
You could also save your levelling-up for later, because if you're getting chased by creepers, and you happen to pick up a few orbs, you wouldn't be forced to stop and mess around with your skills.
The branches of this Skill Tree should be related somehow. Example: Passive skill that makes you jump higher has two branches: 1) Jump normally, fall slower (cutting fall damage). 2) Jumping twice as far as normal. Another idea: upon spawning, your Skill Tree gets generated, and it's different each time you spawn. A skill tree couldn't have all the skills, and this way some skills would be available to certain players but inaccessible to others.
With these ideas, levelling wouldn't necessarily stop when you get to the top of your tree; you could explore around your tree and see what other skills you have, because it wouldn't be laid out to you so you can see every skill. Each skill would be a mystery until you obtained the skill below it on the tree.
I think this would be a fun way to add skills to Minecraft. It wouldn't turn it into an RPG, and it would add more variety and surprise to SMP. If you love/hate these ideas, or have something to add, please leave a reply.
Again, RPG like things are not bad. I was actually hoping for learning abilities, like...a chargeable high jump or like another guy posted, edge grabbing, like grabbing a ledge and pulling yourself up.
You die, you loose them all. Maybe... make a maximum about of skills at one time, so you cannot get them all, you can only choose combinations.
Like...Say their are...20 skills in total
But you can only get 5 at a time.
But I like your idea too

@Locklear308: First of all, this is pretty much what I was suggesting. When I said "No RPG-ish" I was mainly referring to levelling up damage and speed and stuff; I don't think anybody wants that, thank you for helping me be more specific. Nothing that would give you an unfair advantage, just some fun little abilities to spice up the game, and perhaps give you a more interesting PvP experience. Also, thank you for reminding me - Another idea that I had was this: When you die, only the experience IN YOUR BAR would be dropped, not ALL your accumulated exp. This would help fix lag. Those annoying spheres can literally destroy chunks with their lag.
If we can trust the image that Jeb tweeted, pretty much the exact opposite of what we were discussing is going to be implemented. Higher levels get more strength, damage resistance, and speed, and will pretty much give them a completely unfair advantage. This seems to me like a really boring and unoriginal way to add experience and levels to Minecraft. Hopefully, Notch and the rest of Mojang will prove me wrong; I hope I'm just jumping to conclusions and this isn't what's going to happen.

i believe that those effects were the buffs from potions, and not skills from leveling up. Maybe as you attain higher levels, you can make better potions IE (speed II, strength II).
I agree with your skills idea, but only for smp. On a single-player world, I think you should be able to level up skills individually. Currently, I play predominantly single player, and I would love to be able to run, dig, kill, and swim faster. That would make single-player way more enjoyable for me personally.

Edit: I also agree with the person above.
Thanks, And yeah that is true.
Nothing silly Notch. Just give us some cool abilities to learn.
