The mod that adds more metals that all have different uses and is mostly realistic!
All sprites are by me. They're pretty standard stuff, but if you want to use them for anything please let me know first.
Introduction/Design Ideas
I've seen tons of "more metals" mods and suggestions. But they all seemed a bit lame. Either they were all used for the exact same thing (tin tools! copper tools! zinc tools! dysprosium tools!), or they were trying to be realistic but it just didn't work out (nukes are really damn hard to make), or they were trying to be too realistic (you have ovens that can smelt metal AND cook a nice loaf of bread. we don't need special equipment for everything). Realism in a game mod is a fine balance that's different for everyone, so this is something that I like. It might be too complicated for you or too simple, but, well, I tried
Armed with a nice illustrated Periodic Table book, over a year of playing experience in Minecraft, and some fancy new ideas heavily inspired by Dungeons of Dredmor (which has a great crafting system, by the way), I've decided to take my own crack at the "more metals" idea.
New Ores
Argentite This is silver ore. Before you ask, it's lighter in colour than coal. Not all minerals get to be in technicolour, you know! It can be smelted into silver ingots. That's it, really. It can be found from layers 48 to 0, and is a bit more common than gold but is also less common than iron.
Cinnabar
Cinnabar is a source of mercury. Also, it's red. You can smelt it into mercury, OR you can craft it into eight units of Cinnabar (which is darker than Rose Red). It's a pretty rare ore, only found from layers 32 to 16. The rarity is to offset its usefulness in potion-making.
New Items
Silver Ingot
It looks like iron, doesn't it? That's confusing. That's bad. So, before you all say how alike they are, here's iron: And here's silver: See, they're different! Silver is lighter and has less shadowing on it! You'll learn to tell them apart soon enough. Okay?! (Also, tooltips.)
With that out of the way, here's what silver's good for: it can be crafted with gold into electrum, and it can be crafted into silver coins.
Silver Coin
This silver coin is basically a less valuable gold nugget. It's intended for use as a weaker currency, a more plentiful coin that can be struck in large quantities. (And before you say the sprite is lame, it has some extremely subtle shading on it! It's not just some MS Paint monstrosity!!) Hopefully, it will encourage more thoughtful SMP players to work out exchange rates and values for the Silver Coin. (And I'd like to see a world option where silver ore cannot generate - so that Silver Coins can only be given by ops. This would prevent hyperinflation but still keep the server's currency in real, stealable items.)
Electrum Ingot
Another look-alike ingot? Once again, this is gold: And this is electrum: Electrum is lighter. Now, I hear all of you people asking "What's electrum?! What is it?!!". Well, it's a mixture of gold and silver. I haven't worked out many uses for it yet, but it would be able to make nice pallid yellow blocks. Do I hear you asking for more pointless coinage? No, I don't, but here it is anyway. (The region of Lydia used electrum coins in antiquity, but since the percentages of gold and silver were not consistent, traders did not offer good exchange rates with them and they eventually switched to pure silver!)
Mercury Blob
The Mercury Blob is a dependable amount of everyone's favorite liquid metal. It's runny, it's liquid, it's a slow-acting neurotoxin too! Truly, mercury is a divine blessing. It's also an essential potion ingredient for slow-acting poisons.
Mercury Phial
This bottle of mercury is a potion ingredient. Or you could drink it straight up and deal five hearts of instant damage to yourself (and get five minutes of poison) as the liquid metal bogs down your intestines.. (It cannot be turned into a splash potion.)
Slow Potion of Poison
Once you brew the Mercury Phial with a Fermented Spider Eye, you get a more useful potion: the Slow Potion of Poison. You can turn it into a splash potion. It does one half-heart of damage every 16 seconds. Its effects last for 10 minutes. And,it doesn't cause any obvious poison swirls (but its debuff timer is visible)! This potion is only good for very long fights (or as a special "**** you" to a retreating enemy), though.
Deadly Neurotoxin
Brew a Ghast Tear in the Slow Potion of Poison and you get the Deadly Neurotoxin. Despite appearing in a cheery heart-motif bottle, it does one half-heart of damage every 8 seconds, and also lasts for 10 minutes. While under the effects of the Deadly Neurotoxin, coming near any cake will cause it to explode. (ha ha see what I did there)
New Blocks
Silver Blocks Silver blocks would presumably be quite like iron blocks, except shinier and lacking that corrugated texture (like the old texture for iron, but not the OLD old texture for iron). I have yet to make a sprite for it, but I assume we could just bring back the old iron textures for it
This is the end for now but I'll be expanding it more tomorrow (and probably the day after that)! Please leave feedback, I've put a lot of work into this
Coming up next: Cinnabar, mercury, tin, copper, and maybe uranium! (Uranium is pyrophoric but is also bloody difficult to make a nuke out of. No nukes!)
Some of the ores such as silver seem like they should have uses of their own, not just electrium. But I like where this is going! Cinnabar sounds especially delicious.
My silver/electrum (yes, it was also inspired by Dredmor, have a cookie) idea didn't contain coinage, but it contained everything else that could make it useful.
Mind you, the electrum was unrealistic and was based on the name alone. I didn't even know that it was made in to coins until after the topic died.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
I like the Cinnabar idea.
I only ask for one improvement on the slow poison/deadly neurotoxin idea though.
How about that, when under the effects of one, you emit no "potion swirls" (the swirly particles that appear when you are under the effects of a potion) and do not hear/see yourself taking damage. You won't know you're poisoned until it's far too late... XD
