I just got this idea while on a server, what if... In strongholds, you could find books that teach your character how to craft a certain special item? Kinda like learning from ancient books, it would be very rewarding to learn how to craft a new item. :biggrin.gif:
...exploring a dangerous stronghold, long forgotten, you find a dust cover book, blowing off the dust you look inside, and read. You read about [insert cool item here] that the ancient minecraftians once used, and BINGO, you learn how to craft it! It needs work, but I thought it would be an epic idea. Came to be while building a bridge, go figure.
People seem really opposed to anything that isn't what it already is, sadly.
Any learned items or 'achievable' items don't go over well with the community.
That being said, I do enjoy the thought of having something that is obtained through accidental findings or killing a boss mob or a rare drop! :smile.gif:

I know right? Finding some cool old book that teaches you how to make...Idk, a crossbow? Or, not just weapons, but maybe redstone things. Or Shields.

It won't work in this suggestion because Strongholds are absurdly rare. Also, I don't think it would be fun. Imagine finding iron, thinking "Awesome, time for iron tools!" And then find out you have to mine x amount of stone or x amount of coal or kill x amount of mobs before you can make a furnace. It's a bit of a pointless timewaster.

You completely missed the point. He said nothing about placing requirements on any of the items. He suggested that there be rare 'recipes' or formulas that would allow you to make items that aren't normal craft-able. Like...a crossbow or something to that extent. If you want to get finicky about it, you can just have 'flair' type material like furniture or new paintings, etc.
And as far as Strongholds being absurdly rare, that will change. They won't be around every corner, but there are going to be many, many more of them.
I like this idea, it would push you to explore a lot more, you should continue to expand on this idea in the form of things the books could teach you and what the books would look like, maybe you or someone else could make a mod out of it, it might not just teach you a crafting recipe, they could give you special abilitys (The EXP Bar), or just good tips, just brainstorming, but it would need to be limited to just a item recipe.
seriously bro, i like the idea but it would be quite lame that you got all the **** and when you get to the crafting table "you must learn to craft" WTF?!? I WAS MINING FOR 13 + HOURS AND I CAN'T CRAFT MY STUFF? also, i understand what you mean, like add new items not replace the ones you already have but:
1. rpg-ish (i like, most community don't)
2. you will constently remake your overpowered sword
3. it hard enought to get coaco powder, now were hunting for books as well?
can't we just get these from the new villages? like you go to their libarys after they give you their money for trading x item to them and then read how to craft some cool yet not overly powered stuff? i mean i must admit, having the sword of many seals would be kickass if i earned it from a ancient book, but it would take like minecraft years to get to that. and lets face it, the whole minecraft community is item hungry and power hungry, and super hard items to find is a receipe for disaster (see what i did there?)

That's the only possible way to find them other than villages and strongholds.
And don't be so sure that stronghold rarity will change. The limit is there for a reason, you know. It's not like it was an accident.
People in multiplayer would get insanely jealous if only 1 person could craft a unique item. They would feel slighted in some way.
As it is, minecraft is a game where everyone (in multiplayer) is completely equal in all ways. The only things different is the individual loot you obtain through mining and crafting, and then using what you have in trades.
Well, it doesn't have to be a SUPER weapon, something new and balance. Kind of a "Look what I FOUND". But also, it should give that feeling of rewarding.
People...RPG stuff... What the **** is wrong with that? Is there some insane hatred for all RPG games? I don't understand. RPG stuff is good.
ANYWAY, back to the idea. The tools/weapons/items you'd learn from these books will NOT be just better things, they need to be different. Like...Perhaps a diving suit? Or... Yeah. New and different unique items.
NOT a better sword
NOT a better tool.
Something different and cool.

I cannot think of any items, maybe you all can.
