I've been thinking about this... In the yogscast episode 31 when they sneak past the guard, it would have been a great example. Say if Minecraft had voice chat, and you can ONLY hear people within 10 blocks or so, they would have to stay quiet. Anybody past 5 or so blocks would sound quieter than the ones within 5 blocks. Voice chat should not be heard throughout the whole server unless the settings are set like that. It would be a great element for roleplaying.
I hope you'll take this suggestion into consideration, and possibly have it released before or during the full release of Minecraft. Thank you for your time.
@PugRme The thing about skype is you can hear everybody. The focus of this idea is so you can only hear people within a certain range. Their voice sounds quieter if they are in the range, but further away. It would be a great element for roleplaying as stated earlier.

Voice chat has been suggested so many freakin' times it is incredibly annoying just to see another thread here... :sleep.gif:
And, like all the other threads, I am forced to say that Minecraft most likely won't get any kind of voice chat simply because it doesn't need it and it would create more problems than solutions. For example, a lot of younger kids play Minecraft; this is a fact. Now, would you like to have a 7-year old kid screaming their head off because some idiot griefed their house? No!
You try to limit the area people can hear you for that nice little effect, but in that case voice chat would be completely useless if you're working on some big building project with friends. Outside programs like Skype work just as well, and you KNOW who it is you're talking to, so then you can only blame yourself if they start to get annoying.
