Its too easy to run around and wack away at animals with a sword. Hunting should be another form of gameplay in Minecraft. I thought the hunger mechanic would make collecting food more of a necessity, and it has, once per game. Within 30 min you can have enough steak to feed a city, and thats just the steak. When you kill one animal, all the other animals, at least the same kind of animal, should run away in fear. Unless you sneak up on, lets say, a heard of cows, and silently kill one with an arrow, and the others dont notice and stay, now thats more like hunting. And if more animal mobs are ever added, there should be a more valuable one that always runs away from the player, so you have to sneak up on it all the time.
Thats a very interesting idea, but I dont know how hard it would be on Notch and the Team because mobs dissapearing when dieing seeming like it might be a big part of the engine.
I know it would be hard to implement, but they should just put a delay on the disapearing body for say 20 seconds, in which time you must go up to the corpse with a knife and right click, and then it gives you the items
