Let's take crafting a new step forward. Not only should we be able to directly craft individual items, but also be able to combine two or more previously crafted objects together to make something stronger or provide it with new uses. For example, a piece of iron armor combined with an iron sword could make a form of spiked armor that deals a small amount of damage to your attacker every time they hit you. Another could be a bow joined with a fence piece to make a stationary manned turret of sorts that can be loaded with arrows so it's always ready. An wooden ax joined with an iron ingot could make a "lumberman's ax" that lasts twice as long and cuts faster. Two foodstuffs combined would create a specific type of meal and adds both the foods' health bonuses. Many applications abound but most of them I would leave to the Mojang team's creativity.
Another idea would be a craft-able fire pit, first a piece of flint surrounded by 8 sticks makes firewood, then 8 cobblestone surrounding one set of firewood will make a permanent fireplace that is lit automatically and lasts for the equivalent of the Minecraft's night. You could right click the fire to place food items 'inside', and cook them (slower than a furnace) one at a time. once the fire is exhausted, it disappears, leaving a few sticks and 8 cobblestone on the ground, as well as any food that was cooking at the time.
One more thing,a way to break down crafted items into their individual pieces using a new bench called a recycling bench or something along those lines. Perhaps the bench would have a chance of leaving you with missing pieces after breaking them down?
There are many ways to expand the Minecraft experience, as many of us here are well aware, but I think these few would build the crafting side of the overall experience into something with more depth, which is something I am dying to see.
I like this idea :biggrin.gif: The iron ingot/wooden axe seems op, Wooden axes take literally 3 logs (workbench, sticks, planks) And Iron you can find real easily, sometimes even on the surface. Maybe a gold axe with iron ingot, since the speed of gold would combine with the durability of iron :biggrin.gif:
I like the idea of the recycling bin, I myself have been thinking about it prior. It would be a reverse workbench where you could salvage 1 of the items you used in crafting (Ex: diamond pick you could get back 1 diamond or a stick [diamond xD]) I think the only problem is shovels, as 2 sticks can be found easily and you can keep salvaging the 1 diamond or whatever you used. Besides that I love the idea :biggrin.gif: maybe a repair style station too? xD So many ideas :smile.gif:
The fire pit sounds nice, I would use it more as a decoration than an actual tool, but still nice.
Good luck catching Notch's attention :biggrin.gif:

Thanks, I don't know how easy it would be for Notch to actually get around to this, if he ever will. But I'm hoping SOMEONE sees it and then word gets around on the forums or something. I'd really like to see these additions to Minecraft
I think you should use 9 cobble for a fire pit and make firewood how you said. Then, combine the fire ring and the firewood to get a full fire pit. Full fire pits turn into a fire pit upon burning away.
