When you kill anything in-game, you get XP for it. I love that. The XP orbs are a bit ugly, but I use a texture pack to fix that.
However though, you don't get anything when you level up. XP is completely useless in Minecraft. Why add this system when it won't do anything? Just another one of Notch's silly ideas.
First of all, you only level up when you kill something. Thats kind of dumb. Whenever you use a special tool for something to destroy something (for example, use a pickaxe to destroy stone, use an axe to destroy wood, use a shovel to dig dirt, etc) you will get a small amount of EXP.
Second: beside, above, or below the XP bar, you should be able to see what level you are. The max level will be 100, and levelling up will be like how it is now. At first it will be quick, but as you level up, more and more EXP will be required.
Once you level up, there will be a notification and a sound. I think the sound that should play will be a short fanfare, and then the sound of a voice saying "Level up." The notification will say "Press ___ to bring up XP screen." Here is a rough drawing of what the XP screen will look like. Please bear with the non minecraft style of drawing I used.
I'll explain all of the level ups.
Combat ability: Will start at normal, and as it increases, the damage you deal with swords will increase. When you fully level up in this, you will do double damage and your sword will take half damage.
Mining ability: Starts at normal, and when fully upgraded, you will do double the "damage" to stone with pickaxes and your pickaxe will take half damage.
Lumberjacking ability: Starts at normal, when fully upgraded, axes will do double "damage" to wood and your axe will recieve half damage.
Excavation ability: Same as above, but with a shovel and with anything you'd use a shovel for (dirt, sand, gravel, etc.) You'll get less EXP from digging because the shovel works so quickly. When fully upgraded, you'll dig even faster but your shovel will take less damage.
Bow strength: Your starting bow strength will be 1 heart with critical hits. In my opinion, the bow is very overpowered, so you will need to upgrade it to the maximum level in order to do 5 hearts of damage with critical hits. Or maybe it can go up to 10 hearts? I'm not sure. :tongue.gif:
Regeneration ability: When you are hurt but have maximum food level, you gain back hearts. Your starter regeneration level will be half a heart, and at maximum, you will heal 3 hearts at a time.
Speed: Self explanatory. Your speed will start at normal, and when this is fully upgraded, your speed will be double. At maximum, your sprinting speed is double what it is as well, and your sprint speed is upgraded along with your normal speed when you upgrade in this skill.
Jump ability: When fully upgraded, you'll jump at double the height. When you upgrade in this, the amount of damage you take from falling from large heights is cut down as well.
Defense: When you have armour, the amount of damage you take from enemies is cut down. If you have your defense fully upgraded, the normal damage you take except from poison will be cut in half, whether you are wearing armour or not.
Sword parry ability: Not everyone knows this, but if you right click with your sword, then you parry and use it as a shield. Currently that does nothing, but perhaps with this skill, when upgraded, you can block attacks with the parry. After taking a hit into your parry, you won't be able to use your parry again for about 5 seconds.
Nice idea! But i have to say that notch added the exp because it's beta! So he has no reason to put it if he doesn't want to... I'm absolutely sure that when the full minecraft version comes, there will be lots of things to spend skill points.(or before full release)

-- Probably would be a good idea to reduce the damage on the bow to start, but it's so much more skill based than the sword I think it DESERVES to be better... it does 2 shot a player in no armor though... fun to use, nearly impossible to defend against. lol I definitely support the maximum being at least as good if not better than now, but starting with less would probably be nice, maybe 1.5 hearts?

-- Actually the parry/block DOES work now, it's just silly. you can apparently block arrows if you're lucky/skilled(and not playing on a laggy server) and blocking reduces damage from creepers explosions, but the system could definitely use some fleshing out I agree
