the mushroom biome is a small island found in some of the larger oceans. this makes it almost impossoble to find one. after serching for hours flying in creative mode you find on. you get all excited. a few minutes later you leave having found only a crude substitute for grass and some red cows.
this is not a good balance. there are 2 ways to rectify this problem.
the first option is to make the mushroom biome as common than other bioms. this would balance it by elimonating the hours of serching and so the dificulty of finding one would match it's usefullness.
however this is not a good option becous all it would do is fill the land with wasted space.
the other option is to make the mushroombiome more interesting then other biomes in perportion to the dificulty of finding one.

here is my idea:
spawn all types of overworld mobs in mushroom biome (as if mycelium were grass)
..have mobs become "infected" after time (~1 minute) (becoming mushroom equivalants) (not nessisarly a bad thing)
....caused by standing in mycelium not by infected mobs (this is not a plauge) (mycelium still does this out of biome)
....50-50 chance for being red or brown (the only diffrence is txture (like sheep))
....become agressive to normal mobs (mushroom creeper sees chicken, mushroom creeper says SSSSS)
....become weak attack (half as much damage)
....heavy (~3 damage per second) damage over time from sun when not on mycelium [mushrooms pop out]
....damage from water [mushrooms pop out]
....mushroom zombies and skeletons do not catch fire from the sun
....health regeneration
....fire proof? (not lava proof) [how else would mushrooms survive in nether]
....difrenses between red and brown creatures? (i dont know what)
....player can be infected
......all vulnerabilities mentioned above
......infinite food [yum i taste good]
........every 30 seconds your health goes down by one [you are eating yourself] (you will imeadiatly heal back)
......not attacked by other infected mobs [the influance of fungus in their brains] (including hostile ones)
......incapable of damaging other infected mobs [fungus in your brain] (click and nothing happens)
......the ability to place mushrooms when right clicking with empty hand
......night vision?
......revert to normal form after 15 minutes of not standing on mycelium (in over world only)
........if you get mushroomed again you will not nessissarly have the same color (red, brown)
small mushrooms automaticaly grow if on mycelium
other peoples ideas added to op:
mycelium spreds over grass but only a set distance from a mushroom
..50 blokes from epic mushroom*
..20 blokes from giant mushroom
..10 blokes from mid size mushroom*
..3 blokes from normal mushroom
..entire mushroom biome [otherwise you would end up with holes in the mycellium]
..if mushroom is removed mycelium decays into dirt (like leavs after wood is removed)
* if included
other peoples ideas added to op but are uncertin:
glowing purple mushrooms?
..cup fungi (means it is pointed up and the colerfull part is on out side)*1*
..extreamly rare
..only spawns on mycelium?
..infected mobs do not glow glow [for programing ease]
mushroom biome in cave?
fungis men? (walking mushrooms)
varying sizes of mushroom
..small (already included)
....one block tall
....placed directly
..medium *1*
....3 or 4 blokes tall
..giant (already included)
....6-8 blokes tall
..epic *1*
....10-12 blokes tall
..chances of growing each type:
....off mycelium: medium=60%, giant=39.99%, epic=0.01%
....on mycelium: medium=33%, giant=66%, epic=1%
Why not make mushroom biomes "creep" across the ground also? Or probably grow spore blocks and it grows along dirt?
the idea is not to compleatly overthrow the rest of the ecosystem.
how ever mycelium does spread to dirt, though at a slower rate.
going with your idea i think that it should be made to spread much faster than grass.
that way the player can place dirt on top of grass and have the mycelium spread to that, so the player can chose if he/she wants the mushroom biome to spread.
I'm putting out Chickshroom as an alternate name for the chicken, heh.
I'd like to see some sort of actual-mushroom-based mob, similar to the Myconid from the AD&D game (basically living mushrooms). They could be similar to zombie pigmen in that they are not inherently hostile, but have a group threat when one is attacked.
i have yet to see a mushroom biome (havn't really gone looking).. can t hey appear underground? Id love to see huge caverns that have giant mushroom forests in them. Ooh, maybe they could add in a third, rare type of mushroom (purple is my thought) that is faintly luminescent.. perhaps a light level of like 4 or 5 (similar to the redstone torch), but with a purple light. Make these giant caves more creepy seeming.
Id also like to see variable size giant mushrooms.. some a little smaller, maybe 2-3 blocks high, and others being gigantic, like the sequias in Nandonalt's more trees mod, that could be lived in.
And yes, I do know that I'm dreaming a lot, lol. Maybe someone at Mojang will see this and be like, "lightbulb!"
Also I'd love to see the mycellium to spread but in order to make not plague spread over your whole freakin world it need to be balanced, maybe only an X number of grassblocks from a giant mushroom can be infected.
agreed
50 blokes from epic mushroom
i think 20 blokes from giant mushroom
10 blokes from mid size mushroom
3 blokes from normal mushroom
entire mushroom biome [otherwise you would end up with holes in the mycellium]
if mushroom

tentative(uncertan) mob names:
Mushchicks(Chickens)
Chickshroom(Chickens)
Fungiporks(Pigs
Sporewools(Sheep)
pleas share your ideas, i will up date the op as people give more ideas
for any comment you make give a reason.
Why not make mushroom biomes "creep" across the ground also? Or probably grow spore blocks and it grows along dirt?
Have infected mobs called Mushchicks(Chickens), and Fungiporks(Pigs), and maybe Sporewools(Sheep)?
Some of your ideas are very nice, being infected yourself hah, that would be very cool.
the idea is not to compleatly overthrow the rest of the ecosystem.

define spore block pleas
good names, i will add them to op under tentative
