I noticed the other day that, when you place two of the same half-block together, they form just a normal whole block. It does make a bit of sense, but what if you want to take the half-block off afterwards? You can't; you have to remove the whole block and waste more materials remaking the half-blocks. I also noticed that you can't put two half-blocks of different materials together. If you try to, it will only place it higher up; leaving a small gap in between them. Then, there's the part where you place a half-block and it can only get placed in the "bottom space". In order to get one in the "top space", you have to stack a block of the same material on top of it; but then that just makes a whole block. What if you want a half-block in the top area, but none below it? So, here are my suggestions:
1. Keep two half-blocks of the same material stacked on top of each other as half-blocks instead of making them form one whole block. (EDIT: I was mistaken about this one. Just ignore this part).
2. Give us the ability to stack half-blocks of differing materials on top of each-other without leaving a gap in between.
3. Give us the ability to select the area we wish to place a half-block. Top or bottom.
This will add to the architectural possibilities and can possibly make nicer looking creations. I hope I made sense on everything I said. Feedback is appreciated.
The game doesn't operate by half-block, it operates by block. So when you place a half-block, it's actually a full cube where the bottom half is solid and the top half is empty.
When you place a second block of the same type on top, it just changes the entire block, not just the empty half-space.
In order to stack different blocks together, one new block for every possible combination would have to be added. I think it's kind of a waste of resources. It'd look nice, but every time there's a new half block added, this list would get horrendously huge.
Also add vertical half-blocks. Just like current slabs, only they'd stand vertical rather than lie horizontally. The direction they face in could depend upon the direction you place them, just like stairs currently do.
You can mine them and it gives you 2 half-blocks...
I know that's true of smoothstone half-blocks, but I'm pretty sure most other kinds of half-blocks don't do that. I could be mistaken though. I'm just going off of what I observed in the 1.8 pre-release. I haven't observed it in 1.9 yet.

No, it just looks like a full block. It still gives 2 slabs.

HOWEVER I like the "top or bottom" idea.
Actually, only data values would be added. One for every combination, yes, but the doubleslab block is already in existence.
I've also been thinking for a long time that they should allow us to place slabs of different materials together, even if it means making a new individual block type for wood/cobble, stone brick/sandstone, brick/stone slab, etc. It would allow for more aesthetic options for construction.
It would also be nice if we were able to place torches on top of half-blocks; that is, the torch would actually occupy the block above the half-block, but appear to be connected to the half-block's model.

However, this is fully possible and has been more than demonstrated by the 8th block mod, even going down to putting 8 unique mini-blocks in the same space as a normal block. Using too many of them (talking hundreds or thousands on a decent computer) may slow the game down a bit but with just slabs it would take thousands to slow the game down or add any noticeable amount of data to a save file.

Ah, I see. I stand corrected.
New data value + new appearance of block = new block.
