(I made this thread earlier, but I now realize that this part of the forum is better suited to this topic.)
I like the idea of creating redstone-powered 'auto-defense turrets.' This idea was obviously inspired by the new uses for snowmen people are discovering, but I'd rather have an actual mechanical defense turret option.
These 'turrets' would look like small wood/iron balistas (sideways bows), with a similar furnace-textured half block like what the pistons have as a base. They would automatically track and fire at any hostile mobs within their range and field of view (180 degrees?). They would fire arrows, and you would need to create ammo for them, and load it into them as they deplete their supply. Each turret would only be able to hold a limited number of arrows (perhaps only a single stack), thus effectively limiting the number of turrets you could sustain at any one time. The more turrets you operated at once, the more time and resources you'd need to spend creating ammo for them. (Thus preventing it from becoming too easy) The rate-of-fire for the turrets would be relatively slow, each shot being equivalent to a fully-drawn bowshot, but the damage would be comparable too. They would require redstone to power them.
Since these would obviously be very complex redstone-powered devices, and they would obviously make defense easier on the player to some degree, they should require a degree of 'difficulty' to construct legitimately. They should require materials that are either semi-rare, or are themselves comprised of other more basic materials.
Perhaps something like this:
:::arrow:::
= Bow = Iron Block = Piston?
Or maybe:
:::arrow:::
= Dispenser? = Stone bricks?
I'm not totally sure on the construction recipe for them and am open to suggestions. I just think they should be an advanced item that would take time and resources to create and would thus most likely be built later in the game rather than sooner.
To summarize the balancing of these turrets:
Positive/Negative Effects
+ Defense for player structures
+ Player Safety (within the area of the turrets)
+ Modding potential / Online PVP potential
+ Aesthetic element (helps create a more 'military feel' for structures such as fortresses)
- Ease of gameplay
- Reduced threat of mobs near home base
Balancing Solutions
+ Slow rate-of-fire
+ Limited ammo capacity
+ Ammo needs to be manually crafted and reloaded
+ Must be powered by redstone to operate
+ Substantial resources to craft a single turret
- Turrets would aggro mobs when they attack, thus causing the potential of creeper damage.
please search! This idea is suggest at least ounce a week. Please search, and search well or don't post at all.
On the idea. Meh don't really care for it.
I have no doubt ideas similar to this have been suggested before. This version, however, is mine. I don't need to search, I just want to propose my idea, the way I see it. Not to mention most other turret suggestions are for far more modern turrets, whereas I'm trying to come up with a reasonable turret that fits with the current technology level of the game.
Sorry, no go. Turrets just don't seem to fit well in to minecraft. Helper-mobs, yes. Turrets, no.
Why not? They fire arrows, so no more advanced than the bow, and mechanics-wise they're no more advanced than other currently-available redstone devices. I don't find them out of place in the game at all.

They're substantially more advanced then the bow and any available redstone device. Successfully building an AI able to track an object and open fire at it is something which is a, relatively speaking, recent advancement. I could, possibly, accept a turret that could be manned by a player or even an NPC (giant multi-crossbow death machine), but a turret able to track and open fire of it's own accord on enemy units... no. Sorry, but I have to imagine it would be very successful at breaking my immersion.

Well it doesn't need to be AI-controlled. Maybe it's 'enchanted' or something similar... much more in line with Minecraft's tech level.
I see what you're saying, though, and I would certainly settle for mounted turrets controlled by players or friendly mobs. In fact, mounted turrets controlled by mobs might be the perfect way to implement this idea while staying true to Minecraft's tech level.
You can always say something is in line with the current tech level by calling it magic. Magic by definition is a phenomena that cannot be explained in conventional means. Magic merely means we don't know how it works.
That being said, I dislike. Snow Golems are fine.

It's a good idea, but it doesn't seem suited to minecraft's mid-eval-ish theme, and would probably make much more sense as a mod.(I would download it!)

Plus we could do Minecraft tower defense games then. :smile.gif:
