Well hello, and welcome to another post about anvils, shall our plea for repairable armor in a way that balanced be finally heard and granted? Thats up to you and Notch, so lets find out!
My Design would be when you make an anvil and use it, it would work sort of like a furnace, you would put the materials in at the bottom and the armor you want to repair at the top, each piece of material would repair it a small amount.
To get them repaired from almost destroyed to full would require.
Boots - 2 pieces
Helmet - 2 pieces
Leggings - 3 pieces
Chest - 4 pieces
To repair Leather armor, you need an anvil made from Iron Blocks
And to repair Iron you need a Diamond anvil, the same only with diamond blocks
As for Diamond armor, that cant really be repaired being that it shatters...or ignore that fact once a stronger more rare metal comes along.
There is already an Anvil in the Better Than Wolves mod. I like the way that is implemented. You use it to create the steel material that is used. And then there is something else that you use to repair the damaged items. It's still for 1.7.3 since the mod creator is waiting for a stable release of 1.8/1.9 to come out. But when it does if that is what you are looking for you should check it out. It's a pretty cool mod.
you know how you said you need diamond blocks and 5 of them to repair any iron tools, that means that you must mine 45 diamond ore. That would be extremely difficult to make and it would probably be better to use diamond tools instead cause they last for ages and are fast.

Kind of the point though, its not easily done, its for people who have alot of iron and diamond on their hands, or people who like to fight mobs(or just are paranoid of mobs) alot and keep their game long term...or Multiplayer since thats usaly kept on the same server until a new patch comes out.

This is a good idea! It should be in the NPC villages and in the blacksmith shops!
