OK, now the armor in Minecraft is... meh.
It was implemented in some veeery early Alpha and never got updated.
Also, it's not that realistic. Think about it - a zombie tends to beat you up even with full Awesomite set that in real life would protect you from anything.
So, there are my suggestions:
* Change the way mobs destroy your armor! Make them have a chance to not affect you at all because you're wearing armour! (Works ONLY with a full set, not exactly of the same material - you just have to be fully covered).
E.g.: a 5% chance a Zombie won't affect you with Leather armour, 15% - Iron, 25% - Gold, 50% - Diamond and freaking 75% - chainmail!
* Oh, about the chainmail armour. You should have 'warehouses' generated in strongholds with chests, where different kinds of armour (Iron, Gold and Chainmail) and weapons inside!
* Silverfish. Come on. They are small insects that won't affect you at all. Instead they have a 50% chance to give you 'corrosion' - the armour bar will turn green and it will slooooowly go down for about 10 seconds. An overall 1 armour point - pretty overpowered for a silverfish! (Multiple attacks don't stack)

Eh... that is great. But something is missing. Could the armour have other functions that just protection? Yes!
I present you...
THE CLOTHES!
Now they are different sets of outfits, with almost magical abilities! There are 3 sets of clothes - Miner, Nature and Hero, and an extra set - Woolen. Let's describe them all:
Woolen
Those are craftable. You craft them just like armour, except that the material is Strings. They do absolutely nothing... or do they? If you will add some dye to it, it will get recoloured! They are just nice social items, that provide absolutely no defence or anything.
Miner
They are found in Abandoned Mineshaft chests, with a 75% chance to be unused (otherwise they will be randomly damaged). Here's what they do:
Miner Helmet - provides a small amount of light (twice smaller that the torch) and no defence.
Backpack - gives you 6 extra inventory slots, but they will ONLY hold mined things (stone, gravel, ores and gems).
Jeans - they do nothing, just look nice with other Miner outfits... but there is a small 1% chance you will get a Zombie wearing Miner's clothes (Dead Miner) while exploring caves in this! It will drop a unique item - Hookshot, great for cave explorations. Otherise Jeans are just a nice bonus feature.
Miner's Boots - prevent 50% of fall damage.
Set bonus - 25% increased mining speed of Obsidian! Useful!
I will soon add info for more clothes types. Please leave feedback and useful ideas!
