1.8 made mountainous terrain much more common. Awe inspiring cliffs and mesas are everywhere in the new maps I've created.
But this isn't good for mobs. They can't navigate up or down steep terrain. A very common sight is to see a pig, cow, or sheep trapped on a single block jutting out from an almost vertical cliff face. Bleating pathetically as it stands in place.
Obviously the existing mobs are not equipped to handle these new mountains. So why not add a creature that is: goats.
Mountain Goats: Nature's Climbers
Goats would be a new kind of mob that would only spawn on lit grass in relatively high altitudes (level 96 or higher, 32 squares above sea level).
Goats would wander around in groups like other mobs. You'd be able to hunt them for meat or milk them like cows. But unlike other passive mobs goats would be able to climb vertical walls like spiders. A steep cliff is no obstacle to a goat, you'd see herds wandering freely all over the side of mountains.
Preposterous you say? Actually this is completely realistic. Mountain goats are incredible climbers:
I like this idea, the only issue may be how to have them jump 2 blocks or more without falling to their deaths. I wish I knew how to mod mobs.... :smile.gif:

They could be programmed to climb down steep cliff faces too, spider-goat style, rather than jumping off.

Spidergoats sounds like it would fit in the Minecraft universe. Beware what spawns when you hit them, though. =P

What I like best: They'd be almost impossible to domesticate, since they can climb out of anything that isn't completely boxed in. They'd be Minecraft's freest mob!

I imagine people using all kinds of complex water current systems to trap goats and prevent them from escaping.
But it won't interfere with existing mob trap designs since they only spawn in high altitudes. So if you build your mob trap close to sea level it won't spawn goats.

I think this addition will add a bit of needed realism to Minecraft's mountains, and make trapped sad animals a less likely sight.

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
