This occurred to me earlier, and I haven't seen an idea quite like it yet on the forum.
If you hold an ender pearl in your hand and bash it against stone or cobble, after about five hits it smashes like glass and instantly transports you to the Nether. It won't create a portal for you, so you'd better bring along some obsidian and a flint and steel!
Alternatively, if you've already been to the Nether and have a Blaze rod, at a crafting bench you can add the pearl on top of the rod like you would do for a torch, and that creates an "ender torch" (name is lame, I know). If you place this in your fort and then go wandering with another pearl and get into trouble, you can smash the pearl and teleport back to the ender torch. Doing so should destroy the torch, so if you want to do it again you must craft another one.
This idea does derive from the magic mirror in Terraria, which teleports you back to your bed. The idea behind destroying the torch and the pearl in order to use it is because in Terraria the mirror removes some of the challenge, because there's nothing to stop you spamming it when you get into trouble. If you need to smash the pearl on cobble or stone, and need to craft a torch out of a potentially difficult to obtain drop like the Blaze Rod (I haven't actually found one yet), then it should make you think twice about using it unless the situation is truly dire.
Let me know what you think!

meh, seems like transporting to the nether without a portal is kinda dumb, so no to that. i kinda like the ender torch thing, but not really the teleportation thing. i dont think you should be able to smash ender pearls. "oh look, i just killed one of the most difficult mobs to kill! oh it dropped something! lets SMASH THE FREAKIN THING ON THE GROUND."

I think that the pearl should smash because it shouldn't be cheap to return home. Smashing the pearl means you think twice before using it. Also, needing to smash it on stone or cobble means it's not always even possible to smash it.
Thanks for the feedback :biggrin.gif:

It's a good idea, but not really fitting to Minecraft. It's finny how the game started in revolving around realistic things, and now we have things like the Enderman, Blazes, and Ghasts. I'm not saying I don't like where it's heading, I just think it's gotten a lot more "magical." This idea is a little off, but you're on the right track.

So there's this thingy I wrote, and it even has a sequel in progress! But instead of writing like a good little boy I just play Minecraft, or whatever games on my Steam library I haven't finished yet. Oh, and Borderlands 2 is the greatest thing to grace the human race (Mechromancer ftw).

Zombies, skeletons and giant spiders are realistic now?
I think notch always had a medieval fantasy type setting in mind. I've played this game since early alpha, and I guess I'm just one of the guys who always thought the fantastical elements like magic portals and such gelled nicely with it. The final build should definitively have some kind of customization menu so one may remove various elements to suit one's taste. If not, there'll always be mods!

yea, that is kinda funny. one thing that should have been MORE fantasy were the villagers. I think they look pretty stupid, and mojang already had a pigman waiting to be added, but they went out of their way to keep those guys out. Kinda disappoints me. I wanted to befriend bipedal swines.

You can't make metre cubed pieces of rock get jiggy with each other, that's just WRONG.
