Now, before I start, let me just say I LOVE the new vines, and I think they can turn any boring cliff, forest, or cave entrance into something awesome. For instance, my one map, Redstone Park, had this boring rock overhang, so I decided to add vines to it.
It looks a ton better than it did before I added them, but there's still one problem...They'll eventually (Even though it'll take a long time) grow all the way down to the water, and most likely across the whole mountain and upwards on the rest of the mountain side. This is also a "problem" with swamp trees, as they look ugly when the vines reach the ground all around the tree.
What I was thinking is that vines should have a pre-determined length and spread distance when placed/generated. Say a vine is placed, and is given a length value of 5, and a spread value of 5. It would grow 5 blocks down, and maybe 3 blocks up (Let's say half of the length value rounded up), so gravity has some effect on it. This is not counting the source block, so there would be 9 vine blocks total for that one vine, granted it doesn't spread left/right.
For spreading, it'll spread left and right 5 blocks, excluding the source, and then each vine block going left and right will have their own values that are between 1 and half of the original vine's length value.
I know, this is a LOT of explaining for something as simple as vines, but hey, I like my landscapes looking awesome.
