Yeah... I can't really think of any alternative uses for things like seeds or hay other than feeding animals (chickens should be fed seeds), or haybales. I'm not sure if haybales would fit into the thread, though.
So far, I think this thread has thought of hay bales and adobe blocks for other alternative blocks, and maybe cow poop. I'm not sure if it'd be that useful, though.
There is one thing that's been bugging me about this... If this is to get rid of seeds/crops that pile up after getting a farm going, why is increasing the rate of production of those items one of the main uses for the compost bin?

Ah, I had a composter sort of thing in mind like this one for my mod, too, except it would make a sort of a slightly tuned-down bonemeal-like item instead of a block. :ohmy.gif: my coder has been having problems getting it to work though, so do you think you could help him out a little? :tongue.gif: The banner in my sig has a link to the page if you'd like to help.

This seems a bit to complicated for a game like Minecraft. Theres too many features for just one simple block, That I't seems overpowered. Minecraft is a game for ALL ages, and some younger gamers might not be able to understand all the math your explaining. As soon as i read about fractions, I lost all hope for this. When i play Minecraft I want to have a fun enjoyable time, not have to do math like " Tall grass has a 1/16 chance on growing on this dirt" and "Flowers have a 1/32 chance of growing." This might make me seem lazy for not doing math, but ultimately thats NOt what i want to do when playing a game about Survival and creativity. Im sorry, but I dont support this.
You know what? You're right. So I think, after seeing some wonderful and inspired redstone creations, that redstone ought to be removed from the game because some younger gamers might not be able to make such intricately wired devices.
That was sarcasm, in case it wasn't clear. You said it yourself: Minecraft is a game for pretty much everyone. And the way it does that isn't by limiting itself to only the things the least capable are able to do, but by letting each player decide how in depth they want to go. This way, not only is the lowest common denominator pleased, but countless scores of others as well.

In case you couldn't tell, I'm in favour of this idea. Adding another item to the "renewable" list will pretty much always get my support, and it's a pretty solid idea in any case.
I like'd it on get satisfaction, but I noticed the information there is out of date. I don't really know how get satisfaction works, but if you're able to update it you might want to consider doing so. :smile.gif:
Well, I felt that it would be necessary to give the Compost Bin an alternative use other than just giving you plain old dirt. I'm aware of this, and it was one of the concerns I had when considering the idea.
Do you have any suggestions on what it could do otherwise, or additionally?
Methane buildup causing an explosion if there's a fire block close enough.
No that's stupid...
Alternate fuel source for furnaces.
No we've got charcoal...
An alternate brown dye.
Too squicky...
What if we gave dirt an alternate use? That would give the compost bin another use by allowing for the production of dirt.
No that's what fertile soil is...
You know, this could lead to farming overhaul!
...
And a utility overhaul!!!!
You could definently create incinirators, maby other things?
Could the incinirator be like a furnace but lava in the middle and a trapdoor on top?
Perhaps more chests?

If I post something of getsatisfaction, Mojang might see it, and I'll be free of trolls? Now I want to post something on getsatisfaction, it's an awesome realistic use for cauldrons involving potions. Do you think it'd be good?
Very earthy. If this were implemented, I'd almost recommend removing bone meal's left-click grow properties and instead make it another ingredient in the compost bin.
Should definitely be implemented if any more crop species are added.
I actually haven't even considered Bonemeal as a role in the compost bin... I think they shouldn't remove bone meal's left-click property (that would upset way too many people), but perhaps they could nerf it. I'd like it if it took two pieces of bonemeal to grow something instead of just one.
Bonemeal could speed up the decomposition process by 12 seconds, perhaps? Or it could be 8 seconds, and worms could be upped to 12 seconds, since worms are much more rare.
Yes, something around those lines. I agree that removing that function from bonemeal would be upsetting, if not a complete revolt. But in real life composted or fertile soil loses it's nutrients after so many uses, so you would add new fertile dirt to it to rejuvenate it.
So how that applies to this and I admit I haven't read all the replies, I may have even missed this in the original post, is that fertile soil wears out with use but dirt can be right clicked to be made fertile again.
Well, fertile soil is its own block. Nice idea though, right-clicking normal dirt with fertile soil could just convert the block into fertile soil and remove the block from your inventory. It'd be faster than digging up the dirt and putting fertile soil in its place, but you'd also be able to freely place fertile soil anywhere, adding land mass.
Currently, fertile soil is supposed to just revert back to dirt after a couple days, but that's pretty hard to code.
There could be different stages of fertile soil though. The block could perhaps grow 6 things on it before reverting to normal soil, and it could take damage like tools do once something grows on it. It'd probably be a better effect, too. Fertile soil wouldn't be able to stack if the individual blocks are in different stages of degradation, though. That means soil that's been used 3 times won't stack with fresh soil, nor would it stack with soil that's only been used once. This could potentially add up to a lot of clutter, not to mention extra coding. What do you think?
I say yes to the blocks taking damage each time something grows on them, then they revert to dirt when this happens. To combat inventory clutter, just make it impossible to pick fertile soil back up unless you use a silk shovel. It's a bit extra coding, but having fertile soil persist forever would, I feel, defeat the whole recycling karma behind composting; it's an ongoing process/cycle.

Neospecter doesn't look at this forum with "it's a game" in mind.

But, anyway, I like your idea.
Mind if I try modding this so we can see how useful having one might be?
