So, I love building pretty buildings in Minecraft. Who doesn't right? On that same note, I love pushing the boundaries of Minecraft's architectural limits to see what blocks work to make a beautiful building.
Anyway, one of the things I've most wanted to build and yet couldn't without it being pretty ugly have been arches. You can build negative parabolas quite easily by using slabs and stairs to smooth out the angles, but when it comes to making positive parabolas to create arches, you have to rely on full size normal blocks alone.
This is because, as many of you probably know already, you can only place stairs you can physically use, i.e. stairs looking up. Many people use this for architectural purposes, such as creating roofs (even in 1.9's naturally generated villages, stairs are used as roofing). Slabs have a similar limitation - you can place single slabs, but only on the bottom half of a block space, and not the top half.
Anyway, my suggestion is to be able to place stairs facing downwards toward the ground, and being able to place single slabs on the upper half of a block space, and not necessarily always on the bottom half. This would help immensely for decorative purposes, where gradients of exterior structures and interior ceilings could be changed with much more precision. It's also a relatively simple change that, given Jeb's recent allowing of pressure plates on tables, I believe might be OKed by Mojang if some ardent person tweeted this to them. Opinions?
(I also have an opinion concerning how horizontal facing fences, such as single vertical fences stacked together, would also be very useful, but that's for another thread I guess.)
I play Minecraft standing on the roof of my house with a laptop, completely naked, the wind lapping at my hair and genitals. It is very refreshing. The neighborhood watch loves me.

This is something I have been really wanting for a while now; more blocks to help smooth transitions in designs. It shouldn't be all that hard to change the behavior when adding a block to the bottom of another block to decide how it is placed. I really hope this one gets added when they start spending that last month before the official release refining things.
Here's the problem with that mod, Slopes. It isn't minecraft whatsoever, and while mods do have that room to make things that don't necessarily fit, its still taking it too far.
Plus, you made a "theres a mod for that" comment, from what I understand. Read the rules.
This is exactly what Better Blocks mod does unfortunately it isn't updated for 1.8 yet
Same goes for you, read the rules.
This is for vanilla, not for a mod.
I support every thread with this idea, as redundant as it is to have people keep suggesting it.
Although, I would prefer having half slabs go against the surface you right click on, allowing for slabs to go on the side also.
Its not like you need to place them as they work now on the top of a room.

Notch, please do this. Cant be much work, right?
If you look at the underside of a block with stairs, they will be placed upside down with direction relative to the placer.
Same with slabs but without direction.
