All too often, I've accidentally thrown my sword over a cliff, my pickaxe into lava, or my hatchet off the top of a tree. I've got to say, it's pretty annoying. I know, I know. "Change your 'throw' button!" "Stop having clumsy fingers!", but I have a different solution.
I think it would be neat if you could secure items to your hotbar with string and a click of a button. If you tried to throw the secured item from your hotbar by pressing 'Q', it simply wouldn't be thrown. Why would it need string? Well, imagine you're just tying the item to yourself.
All you have to do is highlight the item in your hotbar, and press the 'L' key for Lock. A small red dot could appear in the upper right corner of the item that's been secured. You would need a piece of string in your inventory, and it would disappear while it's secured. To un-secure your item, just click 'L' again, and the string will be returned to your inventory, and the red dot will disappear. You're now free to fling your bow uselessly into the face of an attacking creeper once more.
If you opened your inventory and tried to move a secure item into the rest of your inventory, it would go just as it normally would, but the string would fall off of your person, and you'd need to pick it back up.
Now I can't say that's ever happened to me, but in the interest of fairness...I guess it could be useful if enemies could knock the tools out of your hands.

Nice idea. Not particularly helpful to an awful lot of people, but for new players it could be of interest. Also I'm guessing it wouldn't be too hard to add so why not?

you may have a different solution but the better solution is already in your post. this has NEVER happened to me at all. plus no one expects it to happen so i can't see anyone actually bothering to tether their tools onto themself, unless it happens to them every 5 minutes or so.
I use i for inventory. This never happens to me, at all. Ever. You don't need a new feature, you need a new hotkey layout. Sorry dude, but grey_teapot is right.
I like it, because I hate trying to go around lava to get obsidian with my diamond pickaxe and click "Q" and throw into lava. I'm like "FFFFUUUUUUU!!!"

I usually end up doing something like that when I'm near lava... Either it's because of reflex (you should see me with my mouse...) or because I keep thinking Q's W.
