Well, 1.8 implemented hunger. Results have been mixed. For a most part it's a change of gameplay that we all wanted.
But one of the dubious side effects of hunger is it's drain when you do something. Every time you move, sprint, jump, or get hit you lose hunger points. One stands out, however, to change what could ahve been a nice feature to a nightmare; jumping.
"BYUTT DRAGON, HOW IS THAT IMPORTANT"
I'll tell you. Ever make a mineshaft in this game also known as Minecraft? The odds are that you're making it go up block by block so that you can get out easy once you're down. HOWEVER, each step necessitates a jump...and since jumping drains a lot of hunger, you can easily lose half or more of your hunger bar just by leaving a mine. That's a major problem in MINEcraft where the game normally would revolve around mining. At the moment mining without food is a death sentence. And there are times like your first night when you simply can't get much food. It's an issue.
"BUTT DRAGON WHY DON'T YOU JUST EAT"
Why don't I eat? I shouldn't have to eat just to guarantee survival out of a long staircase. That's ridiculous. Some will say that the food tribute is a "price" for going mining. That's ridiculous, as all mining involves is a lot of digging until you reach a cave. You shouldn't have to pay anything to go mining-and that would really mess up the freedom of Minecraft.
"BUTT DRAGON, USE STAIRS!"
Who should have to go through the time and resources to make stairs just to save yourself from starvation? It's dumb. Stairs already have the benefit of faster and more aesthetically pleasing vertical travel. We shouldn't need them to stop starving.
"BUTT DRAGON, IT'S REALISTIC!"
No, it isn't. Most people can get up big staircases like that without an issue. Maybe they'll be tired, even exhausted, but they won't be starving half to death. It's not realistic and if it was, it'd be compromising the fun of the game, and thus it should go anyway.
In short? Hunger is already in the game, but it's an issue when you can't jump up your mine without starving. Fix it please.
I shouldn't have to make a water ladder or ladder for it. Nor am I always on a server that always /home (which makes me feel like a fatass). The whole game is called MINEcraft, and when you can't escape a simple mine by starving, then WTF.
Why is this a problem? The hunger bar goes down eventually, and you will want to carry food incase you get in a sticky situation underground, so why are you complaining? Trees are abundant, make some ladders. And stop complaining about how it's not perfect in your eyes. We all want a change, and yours isn't really that important. If the hunger bar halved itself every 2 minutes, well, then there will be a legitimate reason to complain. But jumping? Sorry but, stop.
I personally use stairs myself simply because they aren't truly expensive (you lose 2 cobblestone in the process, oh well) and they ensure I don't have to spam space simply to move.
Stairs are also far safer when faced against mobs. Yes, they're aesthetic, but they are also a helpful tool against mobs.
"I shouldn't have to use stairs for what they are meant for, I shouldn't have to build ladders either. I should be able to vault up 60 meters without getting hungry, and the whole world should agree with me."
Honestly, you need to either improve your Mineshafts or bring more food. The game has offered these two solutions for you. Don't demand more just because you're too lazy to use them.

It's your first night in survival. You start to mine and find a lot of iron and day approaches. You eagerly go back up, but your hunger slowly goes down and you near starve to death before you can reach the top, even though you had seven hunger bars left.
This happened to me. It's ludicrous. Why should you basically HAVE to make a staircase/ladder? What happened to the good old fashioned block stairway? What was so bad about it? Was it over freaking powered? To the point where getting up one drains half your hunger?
Stairs and ladders weren't made for this either, FYI. They were made so you can just climb without the jumping. It's just easier movement. I don't see how Notch intended for ladders to be hunger saving devices.

We still shouldn't have to do it though. What if you just bunk out for the night and mined? You need a staircase just to get back up? Plus it takes a lot of time to get the staircase in order.
As with everything, a little practice speeds tedious processes quickly.
Personally, when I go mining, I always carry some food, a sword, torches, pillaring material, 2 or so chests, and a good stack of 16 or 32 stairs.
The stairs also help act as breadcrumbs. As far as I'm concerned, it's not a necessity or requirement, but something that I personally would not feel safe not doing.
Obviously, I'm not going to staircase a spiraling rise to the surface; but I do have methods to my madness.

basicly
XD
on a server then /spawn or /home
If they fix it it will take some time. I my self use both 1.8 and 1.7.
