I think those Desert Bushes or dead shrubs you see in the desert should drop 'branches' when broken. It'd make at least one wood resource from the desert, making it not completely worthless. These branches could be broken down into three sticks. These branches could also have a small chance to drop out of regular trees in other biomes.
Using bonemeal on sand could have a small chance of spawning a desert shrub and wilted grass (maybe 2 or 3), making desert shrubs a renewable resource. You could also get seeds from the wilted grass, and you would have to plant it in dirt you find underground, if you wish to make a farm.
I sorta like this idea, but you could just mass farm sticks and get wood THAT much quicker.
I don't think it would work that way.
9 sticks = 1 Wood block.
18 sticks = 2 Wood blocks.
2 Wood blocks (or 18 sticks) = 4 sticks.
The exchange rate is greatly decreased. It'd be a waste of time.
These small updates could make deserts actually possible to live in. The way it is now, if you spawn in one, you have to trek to the next biome to collect resources.
It's a good idea to get wood in the desert, but shrubs dropping sticks is a bit awkward.
Maybe there could be some sort of other wood resource in the desert.
Well, oases and palm trees might be a bit harder to code. Although, it would be nice to have small strips of fertile soil near water sources, and maybe some grass and sugarcane, too. I guess a new kind of tree would be nice.
If curved voxel palms look as ugly as I'm imagining, they could just use four to eight blocks of wood with eight to twelve two block long palmblocks. The middle, or lower palmblockswould have...coconuts? I don't know.

Sticks could also be put together, 9 in a square, to get a single wooden block. This way, you could still make tools by collecting enough shrubs.

I do endorse the deuselessifying of the shrubs though.
