Here's an idea for a new kind of dungeon generation.
I suggest having long tunnel shaped abandoned mine that would travel diagonally downward. Sometimes it would travel in a straight line, other times it would twist and turn, sometimes it would spiral. But regardless of what shape it takes it'd be diagonal and downward, no flat areas or steep drops.
The entire dungeon would have a single unbroken line of "mossy minecart rail" traveling from the top to the bottom. This rail functions just like normal rail, except it has an overgrown rusted appearance. Although the cave itself could be chaotic and uneven, the minecart rail traveling through it would always be formed in a way that a cart with passenger could travel the entire length by gravity alone without getting blocked by anything. The track would often go on bridges across ravines, through mossy cobblestone and wood plank ruins, pass by lava lakes, it almost would be like a naturally occurring roller coaster.
Now these abandoned mines might have side tunnels leading to other dungeons, caves, or stronghold that could contain treasure chests and rare ores. But the real loot to be had is all this free minecart rail. If you can pick up a stack or a half a stack of mossy rail from a cave to use in your own minecart systems that can save you a heck of a lot of iron.
Now you have 2 options on how to steal this mossy rail:
1) The Cowardly Way
Walk down the mine.
2) The Action Packed Way
Hop in a minecart and ride to the bottom not knowing what to expect, then fight your way back up. Steal the rail as you return to the surface, or if the mine ride was exceptionally cool you can leave it there for future rides.
Imagine walking through the woods and finding a line of mossy minecart rail extending out of a cave mouth. Recklessly you place a minecart on the tracks, hop in, and ride down into adventure.
bumped. i love this idea. you have my support :biggrin.gif:. only one problem though... i think they might have to be more rare then normal dungeons as they could span a LARGE amount of blocks which in turns means alot of rail and moss cobble.
Or you could make it so the rail doesn't work until it has been crafted with a bucket of water to get the corrosion off, or you pour water down the shaft and it becomes normal rail.

I don't know, I think the rusty minecart rail could be pretty decorative. I'd prefer it looking ancient, both when you explore the dungeon and when you use it elsewhere.
This is gold! I think that the Mossy Rails should also be added to abandoned mineshafts. It makes little sense for brand new rails to be found inside a mineshaft that has been abandoned for Lord knows how long.
These would need to be generated AFTER everything else, to prevent the rail from being broken by ravines and caves and such. I wouldn't want to take a ride down these with my diamond armour and sword, ready to fight lots of mobs, and immediately drop into a ravine full of lava.
I support this because I'm a sucker for 'rare' building materials such as mossy cobblestone. I think the world should have places dedicated to things like this. Etched sandstone? Brown bricks? Rare paintings? Sorry, suggesting out loud.
I do like the idea, unfortunately you have to consider the limitations of the world generator when making an 'action packed' minecart ride. There are techniques that could be employed depending on how much effort the Minecraft team would be willing to put. (Air/ravine check for bridges, dungeon rooms for surprise encounters, lava falls 'dangerously' close to the rails, and of course a final room to disembark and begin the adventure back up.) Think of the effort that would have to go into the generator to assure an exciting ride randomly generated.

But that's just the fun. You go down and if theres a missing rail or a ravine...well...its not that far down...
