So in 1.8 Notch added an animation for chests to open and close. This made me think. Why aren't there animations on doors, trapdoors, fence gates, and any other open and close things I might have missed.
Seeing how Mojang is starting to break into the world of realistic animations anyways I don't see why not.

I dunno... IMO, it would get annoying because you would have to wait for the door to open to go through it instead of just clicking and going. And it would probably screw with button timing.

I know this goes against what most developers have been trying to get rid of for many years but I personally wouldn't mind if it changed open and closed states immediately, allowing you to clip through it while the animation is playing.
I do agree about the button timing though. I've ducked into my house running past skeletons and Creepers more than once, closing the door at the last second. Wouldn't want to lose that.

Maybe clicking the door would unlock it, and you could then just push it around, and then when you click it again it could swing shut, I think that would look good.
And if it creaked it could warn you to anything or anyone coming through it
Now I'm excited about this. :tongue.gif:

It's not unthinkable for the animation itself from the beginning to be pass-through partially or have the hitbox of an open door. You're making a fuss over nothing, door animation's only problem is it being not directly functional. Which is not unlike book cases at the moment.

I'm not making a fuss over anything, I'm just pointing out that it would be a silly thing to add :/
Just like the chest animation that you can't even see because you into the menu as soon as you open it...

ldk, I kinda like the Chest animation, but I think they should probably add a bit of a delay, so you can actually enjoy the animation? And then in the process of the delay, your character could probably move down a little, actually unlock the chest, and then pull open the lid. Like in Zelda, but in first person. It would also work for third person, but when you were in first person, you would just see the arms. Or it could always zoom out to like a sideways third-person camera? and then show the animation? It'd be really cool though. If I knew how to make mods, I might just make a mod for it, and then sell it to Mojang, and as long as they pay me a reasonable amount, I don't care who takes credit for it. It would be cool to be able to design stuff that Mojang couldn't, or wouldn't, just because they think it'd be a waste of time. If someone else made it for them, they could just put it into the game.
One issue with this. 1.8 give us the ability to make custom models, including doors, but not chests. Chests are entities, and currently the only entity we can edit is the item frame. If they wanted to animate doors, they would first need to make them an entity, meaning we can no longer use custom models, unless they open up entity editing. (which I do hope they do.)
So I would only support animating doors if, and only if, we can still edit them (And other entities in general)

Not necessarily.
As it is right now, doors have 2 versions. Open and closed. The open version is also used for the mirrored version for double doors. So it could be made that when you activate a door, it switches to the "open" state and in effect plays a closing animation, and vice versa for closing, so the collision will immediately switch to the opposite state allowing passage right away as normal. Further, the animation needs to be only a half a second long at best. So the delay in the animation would hardly be a factor. Plus, I am unaware of any contraptions that require rapid open/closing of a door, though I am no seer on the matters of redstone, so don't hold me to this.
