ALRIGHT, new idea! Too many people like their gravel.
**************
As of right now, the most efficient way to obtain flint is through gravel, and this can be rather annoying if you're looking to stock up on arrows or create flint and steel.
*
My NEW suggestion is that they should make it so that if you break gravel by hand it yields flint, but if you break it with a shovel(you're scooping it) it will yield a gravel block.
Crafting would suffice if it was one or two blocks of gravel for flint in the recipe as well.
But then using gravel itself would be harder, because you'd only get 40% gravel back. I think it would be better to make flint craftable out of gravel.

What do you mean using it would be harder? It only gives you the flint if you break it. You can still place the excess gravel blocks like normal.
I can see this being a problem if someone wants to make a giant castle made of gravel but I really can't think of any other reason why the flint rate increase should be rebutted.
edit: I like the crafting idea, and I'd go for it over what we have now, but it seems a bit odd.

If someone uses gravel commonly, it would become much harder to not only get the gravel, but also to remove anything already placed without losing the majority of what the player spent on it.
The crafting of gravel into flint makes sense because it is like sifting through the gravel for flint by hand.

Well, gravel is a bunch of tiny rocks with some flint inside it. So why not make it smeltable and make it return flint after it smelts? I think it's a much easier way.
Also, a little off topic, but we could maybe do compressed gravel with 4 gravel, so that it looks like normal gravel, but it doesn't fall.
Apparently a lot of people like gravel. I'm not suggesting a new use for it though, I just want that tinder.
Well since I forgot to search this before posting an almost identical idea I will say the idea of getting it by hand at a higher percentage is a good idea, but for all the people who want it to remain as is I do understand their reasons, Gravel has alot of great uses, Scaffolding, placing it between walls so if a creeper blows up your wall the gravel falls and auto-patches the wall as a temp fix until you make a proper repair, as well as being good for roads and streets, although I prefer using cobble for my roads.

But let me know what you guys think is better.
(How much is the percentage now?)
When destroying gravel blocks, there is a 10% chance that a single unit of flint will drop instead of receiving the gravel block back

Also updated the original post, thank you.
Wow, that low?

On a multi-player server, I once found 64 arrows, gold armor and diamond tools in a chest, and I was like, "ARROWS! Wow!"

Indeed this would let you use/harvest gravel indefinitely while still having the ability to get flint whenever you need it.
