My friends and I have been building graveyards next to the churches on our sever. I tell you having tombstones would be wicked, allowing a brief bit of text much like signs. Use 7 stone: bottom two rows stacked, and one in the top middle column.
Sorry, but... no.
It's easy enough to just use stone blocks and a sign to create a gravestone. And considering just how specific a gravestone is - signifying where someone has died - I just don't see it having any chance of being added into vanilla.
I think tombstones are a good idea but their use should be expanded into being a part of naturally generating cemeteries.
Some possible features: grass will not grow on dirt two blocks to the south or east of a tombstone (depending on orientation of tombstone)
A tombstone is 1.5 blocks high, .8 blocks wide and .4 blocks deep, and centred on the block it's placed on (like a fence post) and you can occupy the same square (like you can now with fences).
When light levels are low enough, there is a chance that the two grassless dirt blocks will disappear and be replaced with a skeleton or zombie.
Planting flowers on the dirt block will prevent this, and in naturally spawning cemeteries there is a 60% chance of flowers spawning to the south or east of gravestones.
Gravestones can be crafted or collected from cemeteries and used as a monster spawner.
This is an overcomplicated, useless solution to a stone block with a sign and two pieces of gravel.

Stone plaques. Same thing as a sign but made of stone. This way, you can create a sign that would blend with stone, instant tombstone.
